5th Annual Humboldt Open Paint Out
The Redwood Art Association invites one and all to the Fifth Annual Humboldt Open Paint Out. Artists are invited to paint some of the most dramatic scenery in all of North America. Back by popular demand this event runs from October 2nd through the 7th, 2023. The show will remain up for one week after the contest.
Humboldt County offers many vista's including the dramatic coastal off Scenic Drive in Trinidad or descend trails to capture the crashing waves off of the isolated beaches. Popular locations to set up an easel could include Patrick's Point, the Eel River Valley, the Arcata Marsh, Moonstone Beach, Ferndale, the meandering backroads of Humboldt County or the magnificent Redwood forest. Artists can use most any medium such as oils, acrylics, watercolor, pastels, pen and ink etc. All art must be created outside (plein-aire) during the time frame of the competition.
Each artist will draw for a space at the Redwood Art Association Gallery at 603 F St.,Eureka. Artists will frame and hang their own work. Basic tools for hanging will be supplied by the gallery. Some spaces may vary slightly, and location is by the luck of the draw.
Check in will start at 8am on October 2nd. Participants must get their canvas, paper,substrate stamped at the gallery before they paint on it. Only stamped canvases etc.will be allowed in the show. All work must be framed with artist name, title, medium and price. Artists will be provided with title cards to fill out for all works shown. RAA takes a 30 percent commission on all sales.
An entry fee of $95 for all RAA members and $145 for non-members will be accepted on a first come first serve basis until spaces are filled.
As part of an entry folder for each artist they will receive a rules list, a map of Humboldt County and name placard .
The artwork will remain up at the gallery for one week after the contest. Out of town Artists may take their art down after the contest. Artists may have additional canvas and paper stamped at any time the gallery is open.
Art for judging must be hung no later than 1pm on October 7th. All art must be removed on Saturday, October 14th between 10am-3pm.
Renowned watercolorist Juan Pena is the Judge for this competition. Juan attended Pacific Union College in Angwin, California, majoring in Fine Art and Printing. Juan has been teaching art since 1971.Currently he teaches portrait and on location classes in his Colfax Studio. He is a popular artist who is often invited to display his work at international shows, galleries and museums.
