Jan Spencer, of Eugene, Oregon, will make a presentation titled "Creating Green and Resilient Homes, Communities, Economy and Culture" at CCAT Wednesday, October 14, 6 PM. 14 St. and Union St. on the HSU campus The presentation is free and open to the public. The presentation will profile a fifteen year project transforming a quarter acre suburban property in Eugene, Oregon. Grass to garden, edible landscaping, reclaiming automobile space, 6500 gallon rain water system, passive solar retrofits, community educational resource and more. Jan will describe other green and resilient assets in the neighborhood where he lives. Within a ten minute bike ride, there are well over a dozen properties with similar green features and projects under way. The emerging networks and collaborations provide an early look at what greening a suburban neighborhood can look like. Next, the presentation will touch on "allies and assets." These are public places, civic organizations, ad hoc groups and city programs found in nearly any city or town that can become valuable companions for creating green and resilient communities There will be positive stories from Portland, Olympia, Seattle, Eugene and Boston. Jan will describe "green capital accumulation." Shifting how we prioritize money and time can transform our culture and economy simultaneously. The goal is to move towards an honest and responsible economy that will serve a culture and way of life where humans live within their economic and ecological means.
