DECEMBER GARDEN CHECKLIST
- SHOP FOR BARE ROOT -- Take a break from the holiday madness
and check out the nurseries for new arrivals of bare root stock.
You will find fruit trees, berries, roses, rhubarb, artichokes,
asparagus and strawberries ready for planting. Many nurseries
offer a good selection of budded and early blooming camellias.
They make nice gifts for green thumbs. ¸
- PROTECT YOUR PLANTS -- A hard frost can nip frost-sensitive
vines, shrubs and perennials. Try placing burlap or a cardboard
box over a tender plant.
- FERTILIZE THE GRASS -- If you plan on having a lush green
lawn next year, give it a good feeding now. Local grasses begin
their active growth spurt now and need a shot of fertilizer.
¸
- LOOK FOR BARGAINS -- Take advantage of spring-flowering bulb
sales early this month. Selection is limited, but you can save
20 to 50 percent on hyacinths, tulips and daffodils. ¸
