Mask Mandate Still in Effect in California

Posted By on Fri, May 14, 2021 at 11:45 AM

While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention made interim recommendations Wednesday about relaxing some safety protocols for fully vaccinated individuals, California state law on mask wearing still takes precedence.

Currently, the California Department of Public Health and CalOSHA require that masks be worn in all indoor settings and at crowded outdoor events, according to a release from the county Joint Information Center.

The CDPH “is reviewing the new CDC guidance on masking requirements,” the release states.

While much of the state has seen improved COVID-19 stats, Humboldt County's cases and hospitalizations continue to surge, with local health officials pointing to the B.1.1.7 variant circulating in the community.

Public Health confirmed 45 new COVID-19 cases yesterday alone, making 112 so far this week, and reported another new hospitalization.

At least 40 cases of the variant, which is associated with a 50 percent increase in transmission and more severe illness, have been identified locally via genomic sequencing.

While the state reviews the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) new masking guidance, all of California’s COVID-19 safety measures, including masking, remain in effect. The CDC yesterday released interim recommendations, stating that fully vaccinated individuals do not have to wear facial coverings in most settings. However, the CDC outlines several exceptions, such as state law, that supersede its guidance.

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) announced late last night that the state “is reviewing the new CDC guidance on masking requirements.” CDPH and CalOSHA continue to require masks be worn in all indoor public places and crowded outdoor settings. Updates to masking guidance will be shared as they become available.
