City of Eureka and Eddy Alexander announce $500 cash prize awarded to Larry Lage

June 2, 2020 (Eureka, CA) – Today, Eddy Alexander and the City of Eureka announced the first of three winners in the Summer 2020 Eureka Community Photo Contest. Larry Lage of Eureka, CA was the recipient of a $500 cash prize for a photo he submitted of the Eureka waterfront.

“There have been hundreds of photos submitted to date and the diversity and beauty were all incredible. It was very difficult to choose our first winner but this image really struck us because of its relevance to this moment in time,” Emily Kirsch, Eureka Community Marketing Lead said. “Larry’s photo captured the somewhat surreal situation we’re all living in. When we looked at this photo, we noted that the amazing people of our community were hidden away but, still, their presence was vibrant and clear with bright shining lights and signs of beauty everywhere. We loved that this image showcased a diversity of places, colors, and situations around a single iconic place in the city.”

Strength and resiliency have long defined the people who choose to call this region home but in this photo, the committee was struck by how that reality was layered with the natural beauty, calm, and peacefulness of our serene coastal setting.

The community photo contest is celebrating Eureka’s most iconic people, places, and moments. There will be two more $500 prizes for the top submissions in the coming weeks. The next awardee will be selected on June 15th and the final awardee July 1st. Photos that have already been submitted will still be eligible to receive an award in the second and/or third rounds of judging but new photo submissions are also highly encouraged.

All residents and local business owners in Humboldt County (18+ and not directly employed by the City of Eureka or Eddy Alexander) are encouraged to submit their favorite photos. Please note that high resolution photos without watermarks are preferred. Photographers are strongly encouraged to use existing photos from their collections and to think about the events, activities, and experiences that have always made Eureka a great place to live, work, and visit. While new shots can be entered, it is important to be mindful of social distancing, facial covering requirements, and other relevant Humboldt County orders related to COVID-19.
