UPDATE:
The Hoopa Office of Emergency Services planned to hand out food boxes from three locations yesterday from noon to 4 p.m. to launch a three-day distribution event. It ran out of supplies in 45 minutes, having given out more than 200 boxes.

The event will continue today at a single location — the Hoopa fire station — at noon but the office is “predicting that the total supply remaining will all be gone in today’s event.” Check the original post for details about further distribution events scheduled for next month. PREVIOUSLY:
The Hoopa Valley Tribe Office of Emergency Services will hold a series of food box distributions this week open to anyone who lives in the area.

The tribe will be distributing from noon to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday — and again on May 26 through May 28 — from three locations: Tsemeta Nursery at 503 Marshall Lane, Hoopa Modular at 61 Calpac Road and the fire station at 11121 State Route 96.

Across the county and the nation, as unemployment rates have soared in the face of COVID-19 related shelter-in-place orders, food insecurity has been on the rise and food banks have seen demand skyrocket.

The food boxes were each prepared for a three-person household and contain canned vegetables, fruits, meat, beans, soup and spaghetti sauce, as well as milk, pasta, rice, mashed potatoes, juice, cereal and more. Households with four or more people may qualify for a second box.

The event is open to all community members. Those unable to make it due to transportation issues can call (530) 625-8100 to arrange for delivery but are urged to call in advance as supplies will be limited. For more information, visit the tribe’s OES website here.
