Humboldt State University’s next provost will arrive on campus in January with a fair amount of baggage from his last stint as an administrator, for which he’s remembered as either a rogue dean or fierce equality advocate, depending on whom you ask.

Alexander Enyedi, who’s hire was announced by HSU President Lisa Rossbacher Dec. 1 following a more than a year-long search, is currently a biology professor at Western Michigan University, where he served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences until June, when his contract was unceremoniously allowed to expire. WMU Provost Timothy J. Greene’s decision not to renew Enyedi’s contract — and to effectively strip him of dean duties back in January — caused a bit of a firestorm on campus, where 200 people showed up at a board of trustees meeting to support Enyedi, a pair of deans resigned in solidarity, 1,300 people signed a petition demanding his reinstatement and faculty issued Greene a no-confidence vote over the decision.

Make Money off Your Problems

Posted By on Sat, Dec 5, 2015 at 2:31 PM

Did your booboo leave you and take the dehumidifier you went 50-50 on? Want to get your deposit back from Floyd Squires? Fugly haircut got you down? Take your problems to Southern California, to court and to the bank.

Okay, it's not going to be an actual court, with an actual judge. It's going to be a TV courtroom with an as-yet-to-be-named celebrity judge, and the USA network has put the call out to humble Humboldt county residents to come down and squabble on daytime TV.

Here's the blurb they sent us:

From the Executive Producer of WIPEOUT comes a new court television show like you've never seen before! Because in our courtroom, you argue your case to a . . . A CELEBRITY JUDGE!

Bringing your problems to a CELEBRITY JUDGE? Sounds great! And it gets better! They will fly you down to Los Angeles (thus paving the way for a future case against the perenially-delayed airlines at the California Redwood Coast - Humboldt County Airport), put you up for the night, pay out if you win the case, pay out if you lose the case, and pay you a "substantial" amount as an appearance fee.

According to casting assistant Tashina Diaz, almost any kind of "lighthearted dispute" will be considered for the show, even someone not paying for dinner like they said they would. All civil claims below $5,000 will be considered.

The downsides? Well, there's that whole not actually being a legal court thing, so any judgement made on television won't hold up for future litigation. Also, television tends to bring out the stupid in people, so maybe hide this announcement from your more naive friends/roommates/college students.

Diaz refused to give us any hints as to who the CELEBRITY JUDGE might be, but fingers crossed for Guy Fieri making "This is Triple-D de jure!" his new catchphrase.

If you're interested, Diaz can be reached at [email protected].

Draft Klamath Legislation Drops Dam Removal, Includes 'Poison Pill' Land Giveaways

Posted By on Fri, Dec 4, 2015 at 11:21 AM

A look at the four Klamath dams slated for removal under the Klamath agreements of 2010. Dam removal has been left out of draft legislation that would enact the agreements.
  • A look at the four Klamath dams slated for removal under the Klamath agreements of 2010. Dam removal has been left out of draft legislation that would enact the agreements.
Oregon Congressman Greg Walden released a draft of long and eagerly anticipated Klamath legislation Thursday but it quickly drew the ire of local stakeholders.

Legislation is desperately needed to salvage the historic 2010 Klamath Basin Restoration Agreement, which saw diverse stakeholders come together in a compromise aimed at resolving the decades-long Klamath water crisis and restore beleaguered salmon runs. The agreement is set to expire in about a month, and many had given up hope that Congress would pass the legislation needed to move the agreement forward.

So you’d think news that someone in Congress has drafted legislation to enact the deal — after years of inaction — would be met locally with cheers and fist pumps.

“Unfortunately,” North Coast Congressman Jared Huffman said in a statement, “Congressman Walden’s draft conspicuously leaves out the dam removal that’s vital to river restoration — the centerpiece of the whole agreement for my constituents in California — and adds poison pills in the form of massive giveaways of public lands that were never part of the settlement.”

Warren: Guilty on All Counts

Posted By on Thu, Dec 3, 2015 at 2:40 PM

UPDATE:
After just a couple hours of deliberations, a Humboldt County jury convicted Jason Warren of all counts.

The jury foreperson wept as the court clerk read off the verdicts in the case: guilty of the deliberate, premeditated murder of Dorothy Ulrich; guilty of the deliberate, premeditated murder of Suzanne Seemann; guilty of the attempted murder of Jessica Hunt; and guilty of the attempted murder of Terri Vroman-Little. Additionally, the jury found Warren guilty of special allegations that he laid in wait and tortured Ulrich, and that he committed multiple murders. Warren faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Family members of the victims wept and hugged at the conclusion of the hearing, which resolves the case more than three years after the murders.

Warren, clad in slacks and a dress shirt, with his black hair slicked back and braided in a pony tail, shook his head slightly as the first verdict was read but otherwise showed no emotion. Perhaps underscoring the case’s impact on the local community, the courtroom was packed to near capacity, with a number of notables attending, including District Attorney Maggie Fleming, Chief District Attorney Investigator Wayne Cox, Undersheriff Billy Honsal and Sheriff Mike Downey, who even held the door for jurors as they were brought into the courtroom.

Warren is due back in court Dec. 9 for a court trial on an unrelated matter. His sentencing date has not yet been set.

PREVIOUSLY:
Accused double murderer Jason Warren’s fate now rests with a Humboldt County jury.

  • El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency Deputy Director of Community Services Kristin Brinks.
Kristin Brinks, the county's new director of Health and Human Services hired last month and slated to begin in January, has decided she doesn't want the job. Brinks notified the board of supervisors Dec. 1 in a brief, awkwardly phrased letter that she would be declining the position just a couple of weeks after accepting it.
