The Back Slap

In case you missed it yesterday, the Times-Standard's Thaddeus Greenson delivered the definitive account of 3rd District Supervisor Mark Lovelace's sarcasm-powered slap-on-the-back, which he delivered last week to fellow supervisors Virginia Bass and Rex Bohn at a meeting of the California State Association of Counties in San Jose.

Lovelace was reportedly frustrated at being replaced by Bass as co-chair of the Coastal Counties Regional Association (among other frustrations). That disgruntlement evidently found an outlet post-meeting when Lovelace approached Bass and Bohn from behind and delivered a pair of facetious "thanks-a-lot-guys" thumps. As Greenson reports, there's some dispute as to the velocity of the gesture. Bass said it aggravated an existing shoulder injury.

Lovelace reportedly apologized, and both Bass and Bohn said they hope the board can move forward.

Fortunans: Don't Close the Baby Dept.

Posted By on Wed, Nov 27, 2013 at 4:15 PM

In this week’s issue of the Journal (paper version out on the street now, web version up tomorrow, Nov. 28), we write about a shortage of ob-gyn docs in Humboldt, and how St. Joseph Health System’s talk of possibly closing down Redwood Memorial Hospital’s OB program might be one of several influencing factors.

Now, in a news release this afternoon, Erin Dunn, CEO of the Fortuna Chamber of Commerce, says there will be a community meeting Dec. 5 to talk about the potential closure of Redwood Memorial’s OB program.

Here's the chamber's announcement:

THE MATERNITY CENTER AT REDWOOD MEMORIAL HOSPITAL IS ON THE CHOPPING BLOCK!

ATTEND THIS COMMUNITY MEETING SO YOUR VOICE CAN BE HEARD THURSDAY, DECEMBER 5, RIVER LODGE, FORTUNA @ NOON

Losing the Obstetrics program will harm the viability of Redwood Memorial Hospital. Residents of the Eel River Valley and Southern Humboldt will have to travel to Eureka to have their babies.

The Board of Trustees will be deciding the fate of this program soon!

Attend this community meeting and voice your concern.

For information about the meeting, please contact Erin Dunn @ the Fortuna Chamber of Commerce. 707-725-3959.

Get Your Greyhound Ticket Early

Posted By on Mon, Nov 25, 2013 at 4:05 PM

wait.gif
Wanna ride The Dog? Well, fine. But you have to buy your ticket first, and we don't mean directly from the Greyhound bus driver. Says a news release from Larry Pardi, the City of Arcata's public transportation superintendent:

"Gone are the days when one could flag down a Greyhound bus and pay the driver or ride to the next station to purchase tickets there. Now Greyhound customers must have a ticket or reservation in order to hold a seat. In most cases, if passengers do not check in prior to the scheduled departure time, tickets can be cancelled with no refund given."

This means you must get your reservation and ticket online (Greyhound.com), by phone ((800) 231-2222), or by marching yourself down to the station — in Arcata, that's at the transit center bus terminal on E Street between 9th and 10th.

Do it. Or, suffer a fate similar to that of roughly 100 people so far, says the release, who've recently tried that old flagging-down, buying-later method and been turned away. You could miss your flight, or that appointment with your doc, or maybe Thanksgiving dinner.

Today, in our third and final installment of Facebook-centric introductions to aspiring Eureka City Council candidates, we meet the social media profile of Barry Smith, president and founder of Barry Smith Construction. That "SARCASM" sign up top is his profile pic.

It's clear from a quick glance at his photos that Smith loves his chopper.

This Funny-Sad Local Reddit Post Wins the Day

Posted By on Fri, Nov 22, 2013 at 11:34 AM

The hilarious and poignant picture below, which was submitted to Reddit by user "Galaga88," has racked up nearly three-quarters of a million views in just 15 hours. The heading reads, "My dad died yesterday. But he had his priorities straight before he went."

Bravo, Steve.

Note the hospital logo in the upper-right corner. And if you have a few minutes, check some of the comments. The top-rated quip? "How fast was the Internet?"

Plumbers Union Calling for Lost Coast Brewery Boycott

Posted By on Thu, Nov 21, 2013 at 1:43 PM

GRANT SCOTT-GOFORTH

Rumors of this boycott had been brewing for some time, but apparently it's official. In a poster that appeared in Old Town overnight, the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local No. 290 accuses Lost Coast Brewery of hiring out-of-town contractors to build its new brewery on south Broadway, undercutting local wages and eliminating training opportunities.

The subcontractor, Cone Plumbing out of Yreka, "does not pay AREA STANDARD wages and benefits to their plumber employees," the flyer reads. "SUBSTANDARD wages contribute to the erosion of our local economy."

Calls placed to representatives of the union were not returned. Lost Coast Brewery owner Barbara Groom was unavailable, and has not responded to an email.

Yesterday we channeled Facebook to introduce you to Chet Albin, one of three candidates hoping to get appointed to the Eureka City Council next month by Mayor Frank Jager. Today, in our second social media intro, we check out the Facebook persona of local TV news veteran Leslie Lollich. (Click here and scroll down for her paper application to the city.)

While her fellow candidate filled his timeline with political messages, Lollich's page is largely dominated by pictures from the Humboldt Botanical Garden.

Here she is in a post from last  Saturday:

Co-op and Union Reach Tentative Agreement

Posted By on Thu, Nov 21, 2013 at 12:01 PM

news3.jpg
Labor negotiations have been tense between the North Coast Co-op and the Local 5 of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, but a union rep just released the following press release:

After 7 difficult months of contract negotiations, UFCW Local 5 is pleased to announce they have reached a tentative agreement with the North Coast Co-op. Federal Mediator Greg Lim worked with the parties for the past 2 days to achieve an equitable agreement. UFCW Local 5 would like to thank all those who have supported the workers during this time and ask that you continue to shop our local union stores. While, no one side is completely happy with the outcome, which tends to be the sign of a good contract, the two sides have overcome they’re differences and will move together in a positive direction for the future. We thank the community again for all their support.

Meet Your Next Eureka Councilmember via Facebook, Vol. 1

Posted By on Wed, Nov 20, 2013 at 5:03 PM

UPDATE: Albin's Facebook page seems to have disappeared:

Original post:

In less than a month, Eureka Mayor Frank Jager will select one of three candidates who have thrown their names in the hat, hoping to replace 5th Ward representative Lance Madsen on the Eureka City Council. Yesterday we showed you the applications each candidate submitted to the city.

Next, let's see what the candidates reveal about themselves on Facebook, shall we?

Proceeding alphabetically by last name, we'll start with retired insurance broker and property manager Chester "Chet" Albin.

One quick note: Albin just re-registered six weeks ago under a new address. Until then he was registered in Eureka's 2nd Ward. His new address, conveniently, puts him in the 5th.

Albin is one of two registered Democrats in the running, as noted yesterday in a blog post by the spousal consort of Humboldt County Supervisor Virginia Bass, "Not that this matters as our local races are non-partisan," Bass's husband added.

Still, judging by Albin's Facebook persona, politics seem to be very important to him. Voter records show that Albin switched from Republican to Democrat in July 2012, and his Facebook "likes" show him to be a man who's not afraid to go against the grain of his new party.

Chet Albin's Facebook likes include:
