Eureka City Attorney to Resign

Posted By on Fri, Jun 4, 2010 at 10:40 AM

Eureka City Attorney Sheryl Schaffner today announced that she will resign next month and move to the Bay Area, where she will become the city attorney for San Ramon. Schaffner, whose last day with the city will be July 9, said she and her husband are moving in order to be closer to her aging parents and new grandson.

"Time passes too quickly to let it slip by without being there for your family," she said in a statement.

Schaffner expressed regret for putting the Eureka City Council in a tough position. (Eureka City Manager David Tyson announced last month that he, too, will be leaving ... to say nothing of the ongoing election season.)

"I feel terrible leaving the City in these tough times, creating another challenge for the City Council right now, but I have to put my family first," Schaffner said in the statement.

Schaffner came to the position nearly four years ago after serving as counsel to the North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board. Tyson described her as "a tireless and invaluable member of our team."

The City Council will begin discussing a transition plan at its June 8 meeting.
