What happened to KEET?

Some of you may have noticed that your one and only PBS affiliate and/or some radio station you listen to disappeared today. Wondering why? KEET outreach coordinator Claire Reynolds explains:

MANDATORY SHUTDOWN AT THE KEET-TV TOWER INTERRUPTS TELEVISION AND RADIO BROADCASTING

Due to work on the KEET-TV tower in Kneeland, KEET-TV’s digital signals have been off the air today, Thursday, June 11, 2009 since approximately 9:30 a.m.

The mandatory shutdown is required as a safety precaution to protect the tower crew that is installing new strobe lights at the top of KEET-TV’s 400 foot tower.
The tower service crew from Sacramento has been on the tower since 9:30 a.m. KEET was expecting to restore transmission by 1:00 pm, but due to inclement weather on Kneeland, the tower service has been delayed. The existing tower lights, which alert low-flying planes to the presence of the tower, malfunctioned and could not be repaired. Therefore KEET is replacing the strobes with new energy efficient LED lights.

This shutdown also affects the over-the-air television and radio broadcasts by Eureka Television Group and Eureka Broadcasting. SuddenLink cable subscribers will be able to view KEET-TV, thanks to the fiber cable connecting the KEET studio to SuddenLink. Cable systems serving Garberville and Crescent City will not be able to pick up the KEET-TV signal.
