Westhaven's Blackberry Pie Fire Sale

Posted By on Fri, Jul 24, 2020 at 10:49 AM

If you're missing the annual Westhaven Wild Blackberry Festival, which is canceled due to COVID-19 this year, help is on the way: The Westhaven Ladies Club will be selling its stockpile of 450 frozen blackberry pies for $20 a pop on Sunday, July 26 starting at 10 a.m. It's help for the Westhaven Volunteer Fire Department, too, since all the proceeds from the yearly berry bacchanal go toward its equipment, maintenance and other expenses.

Where a casino's doors have (temporarily) closed, a new craft brewery has opened.

Housed within the Blue Lake Casino — which recently shut down for the second time due to the pandemic — Powers Creek Brewery, which remains open, has started serving craft beer in the outdoor seating area for Alice's restaurant. Owned by the Blue Lake Rancheria Tribe, it's the second tribe-owned brewery in our county along with Mad River Brewing, which is owned by the Yurok Tribe, and one of only five nationally.

Manzanilla Blooms in Henderson Center

Posted By on Sun, Jul 19, 2020 at 12:15 PM

On Thursday, visitors to the Henderson Center Farmers Market got a sneak preview of Manzanilla, the Spanish and Mediterranean spot opening in Le Monde's former spot. Starting this week, the restaurant will be open Tuesdays through Saturdays from noon to 6 p.m. for takeout and outdoor dining. So far the lunch menu is brief and the restaurant is temporarily cash only, but chef David Velasco-Guzman and partner and sous chef Walter Rubke expect to expand gradually.

With city approval, Manzanilla set up tables in the adjacent parking lot on Saturday, where, among others, chef Josh Wiley of Five Eleven and his girlfriend Cheyanne Samson took in sunshine and "amazing" empanadas.

A New Raliberto's Opens on Broadway

Posted By on Thu, Jul 9, 2020 at 5:42 PM

Many a dirndl was rent in mourning over the closure of Stuft Potato, the sole local source of spaetzele, jaeger schnitzel and scores of other Austro-German delights. Now at least we may feed our emotions at the Raliberto's Taco Shop that has sprung up in its place.

According to Roberto Hernandez, whose family owns this branch of the franchise, it opened on Friday for both takeout and dine-in service at five tables. The menu is the same as the popular outpost by the county jail on Fourth Street, including the only carne asada burritos that briefly return the spark to the eyes of homesick San Diegans.

Mazzotti's Shutters in Response to Statewide Closures

Posted By on Wed, Jul 1, 2020 at 6:16 PM

Following Gov. Gavin Newsom's order today shutting down indoor restaurants and other indoor businesses in 19 California counties due to rising COVID-19 infection rates, Mazzotti's on the Plaza owner Joseph Mazzotti has closed the Italian eatery, at least for now.

In a Facebook post, Mazzotti wrote the closure would be until further notice. "Our staff, your families and our community is first on our mind! We want to do what is right and we feel this is!"

Via text, Mazzotti wrote that he had been considering pausing service over the weekend, amid trying to organize the week's staffing and watching the increase of COVID-19 cases on the news. Newsom's announcement solidified the choice.

The restaurant had been offering takeout during shelter in place and had established both gift card sales and a GoFundMe. Its sister location in Eureka closed in February of last year.
