UPDATE: The Humboldt State University website says there is no emergency on campus and operations are normal (see below).

Arcata police are investigating a shooting at the corner of 15th and H streets that occurred shortly before 9 a.m. this morning.

Officers taped off several blocks surrounding the intersection as detectives worked to process the crime scene, closing portions of several city streets for a couple of hours. All closures have been lifted at this time.

A call to the Arcata Police Department has not yet been returned so details are scant at this point, but a witness at the scene said a man appeared to fire five to seven shots at a car after engaging in a brief argument with its occupants. It's unclear, he said, if anyone was hurt as the vehicle sped off immediately after shots rang out and the pedestrian similarly fled the scene.

From the HSU website:

Earlier this morning Arcata Police received a report of gunshots in an area west of US 101. Although there was an initial report that an individual may have fled in the direction of the campus, law enforcement has indicated that there is no evidence that those involved entered the campus. The University Police Department is working with the Arcata Police Department to ensure the safety of the campus. While we should all remain vigilant, at this point there is no emergency on campus and operations are normal.

From the Arata Police Department:
SHOTS FIRED IN ARCATA

On 8/7/2014 at about 8:47 am, the Arcata Police Department received several reports of shots fired in the vicinity of 15th and H Streets in Arcata. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing a black male adult in his 20's fire a handgun at a moving vehicle. After firing several shots the suspect fled on foot and was last seen in the area of the pedestrian foot bridge at 17th and G Streets.

Two bullets fired by the shooter were located in the wall of a nearby apartment building. One of those bullets was removed from the wall by investigators. The second bullet, however, went through the wall and into the living room of the apartment. It was located on a couch inside the living room.

A third bullet struck an unoccupied parked car.

Arcata Police Investigators performed an exhaustive search for additional evidence or victims. At this time there are no reported injuries as a result of this incident.

The target of the suspect's shots was reported to have been the occupant(s) of a black 1998-2000 Pontiac Grand Prix. The vehicle was last seen leaving the area at a high rate of speed westbound on 15th Street from H Street. It is unknown at this time if the person(s) inside the vehicle were injured.
