Looks in the Lobby: Photos from Oscar Night in Eureka

Posted By on Wed, Feb 12, 2020 at 4:49 PM

How did you do on your Oscar pool? At the Eureka Theater and Humboldt-Del Norte Film Commission's red carpet night, smart predictions (and luck with the raffle) won folks chocolate Oscars. But the real competition was in the lobby, where volunteers served drinks, Michael Dayvid served tunes and attendees served looks.

Geeking Out: Photos from Ohana Comic Con

Posted By on Wed, Oct 30, 2019 at 5:02 PM

The second annual Ohana Comic Con in the Sapphire Palace at the Blue Lake Casino Hotel welcomed hundreds of attendees on Saturday, despite the power outages elsewhere. Lights were on thanks to the micro-grid electricity generating system in place. The family-friendly, two-day event surged with the superpowers of costumed adults and children as they shopped at vendors, played board and video games, and participated in a costume contest. The event also featured make-up demonstrations (think scary clowns and evil nuns) and panel conversations with two celebrities from the movie world. Check out the highlights in the slideshow below.

American Pickers Wants to See Your Junk

The cast of American Pickers coming to a garage near you. Maybe. - SUBMITTED

How's that KonMari purge going? While you're folding your clothes into little squares, you may be wondering what to do with the road signs, vintage car parts and random advertising ephemera you've got stacked to the rafters in your garage.

If you've got the right kind of stash, Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz from the History Channel show American Pickers might swing by for a look and a haggle in March. The show came to Blue Lake in 2016 but surely Humboldt has a few more collectors/aficionados/straight-up hoarders worth checking out?

The Murder Mountain Docuseries is Upon Us

MURDER MOUNTAIN PREVIEW
  • Murder Mountain preview
Remember that documentary crew that was running around Humboldt on and off through the spring and summer? Well, the finished project airs Sunday night at 7 p.m. on the Fusion Network, which is a real network that I looked up (channel 342 if you've got DIRECTV). The crew and its producer talked to Journal staff during their filming and, after casting around for a central narrative among the threads of weed, missing persons and homelessness, the team evidently settled on the story of Garret Rodriguez, a San Diego man who went missing and was later found dead in Southern Humboldt. The preview for Murder Mountain: Welcome to Humboldt County on Fusion TV's Facebook page is a dizzying series of cuts between foggy roads, grainy reenactments, masked men with rifles on ATVs, pot farms and police, all set against an ominous soundtrack. The post offers the tagline, "Welcome to Murder Mountain, a secretive and surreal corner of America with a deadly history." Not sensational at all. See the video below.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has announced its "Class of 2019" inductees and among the stars of film, TV, stage and music to receive a star on the Walk of Fame is — holy moly, stromboli — one Guy Fieri of Ferndale.

No dedication ceremony dates have been announced yet but expect the host of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives (it filmed in Humboldt once, you might have heard about it), Guy's Grocery Games and Rachel vs. Guy: Kids' Cook-off  (shama-lama ding-dong, when does he sleep?) to unveil his polished pink star sometime next year. Righteous.

If you're looking for something to binge watch that might restore your faith in humankind (no small thing these days), you may want to hit up Wild Jobs, an online series from Animal Planet that's streaming now. Recognize host John Griffith? Yup, Humboldt's own dancing California Conservation Corps guy took his moves on the road to meet what he describes as "hardworking people who've dedicated their lives to helping animals" and pitch in. That means rolling up his flannel sleeves at animal rescue centers, beehives and rescue and wildlife hospitals. It also means clipping porcupine claws and grooming baboons. Episode titles like "Scary Squirrel Showdown," "Ape Karaoke Gone Wild" and "Sea Lion in Distress" should give you an idea of the vibe.

Catch Sara Bareilles in Jesus Christ Superstar Live Tonight

Maybe a flight to New York to see hometown girl Sara Bareilles' Broadway run in the musical Waitress wasn't practical. That's no reason to put "When She Was Mine" on repeat and cry into a lemon meringue. (Oh, like I'm the only one.) Tonight at 8 p.m., you can catch her live performance as Mary Magdalene to John Legend's Jesus in the West Coast replay of Jesus Christ Superstar Live.

What better way to digest your Sunday/Easter dinner/Passover leftovers than to hunker down on the couch and listen to Bareilles belt out the vintage (1971), Tony Award-winning Andrew Lloyd Webber tunes? Spoiler: East Coast Twitter says she's killing it. Get the pie ready just in case.

Way north of the Academy Awards ceremonies in Hollywood, Humboldt hosted its own glittery evening as the Humboldt-Del Norte Film Commission and the Eureka Theater rolled out the red carpet for an Oscar viewing party and celebration of local filming.

The swells showed up in tuxes and tulle, furs and fedoras, to sip cocktails in the lobby, serenaded by musician Michael Dayvid. Then everyone filed inside to watch the awards on the big screen, applauding, commenting and cringing together in the darkened 1939 theater. Pour yourself a little bubbly and bask in the the glamour of the slideshow below.

Bigfootin'

  • The crowds lined up to meet the Bigfoot hunters at the fest.

Did you see something up in Willow Creek on Saturday? Bigfoot's stomping grounds were the site of a tribute to our hirsute local hero in Veteran's Park. The cast of Animal Planet's Finding Bigfoot, including homegrown hunter James "Bobo" Fay, showed up to sign autographs, swap stories and film the festivities.
Elvis of the Bigfoot world Bob Gimlin, who shot the famous 1967 Patterson-Gimlin footage of an unidentified and very furry subject in our neck of the woods, was also on hand.

Serious Stuff with Comedian W. Kamau Bell

W. Kamau Bell has a big laugh. It’s full and deep over the phone, inviting you to laugh with him — maybe at a joke he just made, maybe at him, maybe at an awkward moment, like hanging out at a white nationalist convention as an African American man. The laugh is part of what keeps even those he disagrees with engaged, taking out the sting of his observations without losing their sharpness. In fact, with his keen insights into race and culture, Bell might be just the friend America needs, listening intently and calling us on our shit. With a smile.

Bell is tackling heavy stuff in the show he brings to the Van Duzer Theatre on Monday night, The Kamau Bell Curve: Ending Racism in About an Hour. An hour. Why not? That he’s planning to do it via PowerPoint is another thing but we’ll get to that.

This trip to Humboldt comes at a pretty busy time in Bell’s career. His critically acclaimed CNN docu-series United Shades of America, in which he crisscrosses the country talking to people from all walks of life about everything from neighborhood gentrification to the Klan, begins its second season at the end of this month. He’s got a book, The Awkward Thoughts of W. Kamau Bell: Tales of a 6' 4", African American, Heterosexual, Cisgender, Left-Leaning, Asthmatic, Black and Proud Blerd, Mama's Boy, Dad, and Stand-Up Comedian, coming out in May and he’s got two podcasts going (Politically Re-Active, with co-host Hari Kondabolu, and Denzel Washington is The Greatest Actor of All Time Period, with co-host Kevin Avery).
