Fourth of July Festivities

Posted By on Fri, Jul 2, 2021 at 1:00 AM

FERNDALE FOURTH OF JULY PARADE - SUBMITTED
  • Ferndale Fourth of July parade - submitted
Even if our local events are pared down a bit, there’s good reason to party this Fourth of July. There won’t be a Fourth of July Festival in Old Town this year but things will still be poppin’ with the Fourth of July Fireworks on Humboldt Bay on Sunday, July 4 at 10 p.m. (free). The city of Eureka is planning to close Waterfront Drive and First streets beginning at 6 p.m. so folks can set up folding chairs, catch up and catch the big show later that night. In Arcata, join the Fourth of July Jubilee Parade on Sunday, July 4 at noon, starting in the Creamery District and traveling to the Arcata Plaza (free). In Ferndale, an old fashioned Fourth of July Parade rolls down Main Street on Sunday, July 4 at noon with fire trucks, patriotic floats and more (free). After Ferndale’s parade, head over to the Veterans Memorial Hall for a barbecue with burgers, hot dogs and sides from noon to 2 p.m.

Music, Music, Everywhere!

Posted By on Thu, Jun 17, 2021 at 4:00 AM

This week, COVID-19 restrictions are lifting and so are our spirits. As if meeting the moment, the hills, gardens, bars and parks are alive with the sound of music. Every third Sunday of the month through summer, catch live Music in the Garden in the beautiful setting of Humboldt Botanical Garden. This Sunday, June 20, the featured band is California Poppies performing 1960s pop covers from 1 to 3 p.m. For ticket info, visit www.hbgf.org.

And in McKinleyville, shake out those lawn blankets and folding chairs
for Music in the Park. The family favorite event returns to Pierson Park every
Thursday during summer from 6 to 8 p.m. starting June 17 (free). This week, dance to live music from Blue Rhythm Revue and grab some grub from the Los Giles Food Truck. For more info, visit the event page here.

Over a decade long in planning and construction, the Redwood Sky Walk is owned and operated by the City of Eureka. Its grand opening ceremony featured speeches by the Eureka city manager and representatives from the Sequoia Park Zoo and the Sequoia Park Zoo Foundation, followed by recognition of donors, several community partners, vendors and contractors. The Forest Four, a local string quartet, provided live classical music. (See a slideshow of the ceremony and weekend events below.)

Take us out to the ballgame. Please! Our Humboldt Crabs return to host the Lincoln Potters for a three-game series that kicks off Friday, June 4 at Arcata Ball Park. While Friday's game is totally sold out and bleacher seats are sold out for the remaining two games, there are still (pod) spots on the grass for the June 5 and June 6 games at this time. Tickets for this series and for games through June 13 are available online only at https://humboldtcrabs.com. Get them while you can.

If taking laps around an oval rather than a diamond is your thing, truck over to the Redwood Acres Racetrack for Redwood Acres Stock Car Races on Saturday, June 5 at 5 p.m. ($12). Expect to see late models, legends, mini stocks, bombers, roadrunners and modifieds. Grandstand opens at 4 p.m.
