Humboldt County is officially masking up to flatten the curve and slow the spread of COVID-19. That means wearing a mask on your essential outings and the Journal wants to see your new look — you may even see yourself in the paper, on our social media or our online gallery. Post a smiling/smoldering (we can't really tell) masked selfie on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #NCJMaskSelfie, email it to [email protected] or upload it to our gallery here and let's see how you're keeping your community safe.

'Alone Together' Collaboration Strikes a Chord

Most of the time when the Bayside Music Collective plays, "It never leaves the building," says Mike Dronkers, who describes it as "an informal group of people who do music with no end goal." The group shifted to remote jamming when shelter in place came down, with Dronkers passing around tracks to which the individual members add.
But recently, a project that sprung from the group has started making the rounds on social media, including North Coast Congressman Jared Huffman's Twitter account. Twenty-two musicians — Huffman included — living in or with ties to Humboldt collaborated from afar to record "Alone Together" and its accompanying video, a sweet anthem for getting through the COVID-19 pandemic as a community.

Front Window: Janessa Johnsrude's Sheltering in Places portraits

In one of Janessa Johnsrude's photos, a mother and daughter sit perched in an open window, smiling at one another, a big, milky-eyed dog between them. Their tableau, framed by the window of the house, is overlaid with the branches of an apple tree bright with pink blossoms and a set of copper wind chimes shine at their right. It's an idyllic scene full of affection. So much so that you could forget they are sheltering in place during a pandemic.
The portrait of LinZi, her mother Laurel and their dog Bender is one of a Sheltering in Places series Johnsrude is working on, capturing images of her friends, neighbors and friendly strangers in her Blue Lake neighborhood — all from a distance as they hunker down in their homes. The Show Must Go Online: Dell'Arte's Virtual Season

Despite the Mad River Festival being pushed back to September and a handful of scheduled performances canceled due to shelter-in-place orders, Dell'Arte International is not sitting idle. In a press release, Artistic Director Michael Fields says, "Uncharted times call for innovative creativity and collaboration." Sounds like a job for Dell'Arte. The theater folk in Blue Lake are putting together a schedule of Zoom-based artist talks with key Dell'Arte players, as well as releasing past performances on the organization's Vimeo and YouTube channels.
You'll be able to watch Radioman, Mad Love, Punctual Folly and Mary Jane: A Musical Potumentary from the comfort of your home. "In lieu of ticket sales for the online shows," the release states, "Dell’Arte is instead requesting donations to fund scholarships and the ability to keep the people at the heart of the organization." Four weeks into sheltering in place, some of you have burned through all the books within reach and are starting to eye the junk mail for entertainment. Before you dive into that sweepstakes letter, review a few more interesting options, including your local library and bookstores.
Let's start with the Humboldt County Library. Even if you've never set foot inside one of our county's branches, you can get access to all kinds of materials, no library card required. Create an e-account at www.humlib.org using just your name, zip code and an email address and you'll be able to get your virtual mits on e-books, audio books, magazines and databases, even while the library is closed for shelter in place. Click "Connect with a Librarian or Get an e-Account" or call 269-1915 Tuesdays through Saturdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and someone will help you set it up.

Sara Bareilles and Guy Fieri are Taking COVID-19 Seriously and So Should You

Yesterday People reported that Eureka's singer-songwriter and person who's made me cry with songs about pie Sara Bareilles announced on an Instagram story that she contracted but fully recovered from COVID-19. “I had it, just so you know. I’m fully recovered, just so you know,” she says in the video as she takes what appears to be a very responsible socially distant solo walk. Along with some shots of squirrels and pigeons, she adds, “I am just thinking about all of the people who are walking through this really tricky time and sending a lot of love and just being really grateful for every easy breath and every day that I get to be walking around.” So no, having the voice of an angel who knows my soul does not protect you from the virus. Stay home.
