Looking for small-town fun where you can eat, drink and brush flanneled elbows with friends all in the comfort of your favorite pair of jeans? Head to McKinleyville this week/weekend for the "tail" end of the 50th annual Pony Express Days. The event, which has already seen a Kick-Off Mixer and outdoor Chili Cook-off earlier this week, gears up for the mane event on Saturday, when a horse-friendly parade clip clops down Central Avenue and a festival at Pierson Park gets underway. But before that, there are a few fun events saddled up and raring to go. Thursday, May 31, catch the Fireman's Muster in the upper parking lot at Pierson Park at 6 p.m. (free). Watch local firefighters perform a bucket brigade and hose relay. Then polish your boots and get ready to go scootin' at the Pony Express Days Dance on Friday, June 1 from 8 p.m. to midnight at Azalea Hall, featuring live music by Lone Star Junction ($10).

On Saturday, June 2, take your family to Azalea Hall from 8 to 10:30 a.m. for good eatin' at the Pancake Breakfast ($7, $3). Once fortified, you're all set for a full day of festivities. The parade marches down Central Avenue starting at Murray Road at 11 a.m. and ends at School Road (free). Then from noon to 4 p.m., the festival at Pierson Park is your destination for fun with live music by TAXI, vendors of all types, food, beverages, fire station open house, the Pony Express Saloon, a kids corner and horseshoe tournament (free entry).

Portland's Man Repellant plays its first California date on tour tonight at the Outer Space at 7 p.m. ($5). With a smoked-out, low-fi grunge sound, it's difficult to believe that the band will live up to its name — which sounds like a well-used gadget on the tool belt of Adam West's iteration of Batman — and repel too many dudes. Sway Sisters and Dast Bunny share the stage.

  • Team CRABBA and others celebrated a glorious crossing of the Ferndale finish line.

All over Humboldt County, Kinetic Grand Championship racers are likely still icing their quads from the 50th annual three-day human-powered sculpture race over land and water that ended on Ferndale's Main Street on Monday. In the end, the Grand Championship trophy went to Team Trilo Bike and its diner on wheels. But ACE awards (for carrying everyone and everything you need along the journey with you the whole time, among other strict rules) and just plain dragging your team over the finish line in the Memorial Day sunshine are worthy of celebration. Enjoy Mark McKenna's photos of the glory-fest in the slideshow below. Then get back in the garage and start building your rig for next year.

There are a couple of fun ones tonight at 7 p.m. to appeal to a wide spectrum of tastes with distortion-driven sweetmeats, low-end chunks and sweet, old twang. Local metalhead Sam Bryson celebrates his birthday at The Siren's Song as his band Dullahan gets in on the fun with Oakland metal legends Necrot. Burning Hash and DMT share the smoke as well ($7).

And at the Outer Space, touring solo bass powerhouse CJ Boyd hits the deep notes while dusty swingers Opossum Sun Trail play a post-tour set with guest drum maestro Tavan Anderson from White Manna whacking the sun spurs and goat skins. Rainbow night-tripper mister moonbeam walks and whistles through the stardust valley to a Neverland-endless heaven of a dreaming Patsy Cline.

Hang onto your paddles, the Kinetic Grand Championship's 50th annual Humboldt Bay crossing made a splash with the amphibious leg of the race yesterday. Photographer Mark McKenna was there to catch the flipping, floating and fun. Enjoy the highlights in the slideshow below — from outside the splash zone.

Australia and Canada are in the house tonight at the Miniplex. Melbourne's Carla dal Forno with her detached, deadpan but heavy vocals snake through tight songs of concentric darkness and flashbangs. She is touring in support of her debut solo album You Know What It's Like and will likely put on a great show. Opening up from Toronto is Tess Roby, who haunts the magnetic tape reels of the 1980's dream machines at 8:30 p.m. ($10).

  • Mary Jane the Hippypotamus rounds the Arcata Plaza.
On Saturday, May 26, crowds gathered on the Arcata Plaza to see the blend of art, engineering and madness that is the parade of Kinetic Grand Championship teams and their wild rides. Around midday, after a kind of show and shine with spectators checking out the amphibious marvels and their brave crews, participants looped the plaza in the annual brake test and headed onto the course.

Enjoy the slideshow below and marvel at Mark McKenna's photos of the rolling sculptures (still shiny and new) on the plaza and Sam Armanino's shots from the infamous Dead Man's Drop in the dunes.

  • Kinetic Encounters of the Fiftieth Kind making the magic happen at the Kinetic Thrills Pageantry Party.

If you're going to come up with a wacky theme and wild costumes for your Kinetic Grand Championship team, you want to make the most of them. This year, on Friday, May 25, the eve of the human-powered sculpture race, the bold and bewigged donned their gear and put on a show for the Kinetic Thrills Pageantry Party at the Arcata Community Center. Teams performed skits and song-and-dance numbers for reigning Rutabaga Queens, offered bribes and gave a preview of the on-the-road insanity to come. Check out highlights of the goofiness in photographer Mark McKenna's slideshow of the night below. And check out coverage and photos of the race all Memorial Day weekend long.
