Wardshopping

Glass also believes the system is kind of goofy, especially considering the ability of candidates to move around from ward to ward on a whim. So, why not scrap the wards and have an open race like Arcata and Fortuna do, or morph into a true ward system, where residents only vote on the candidates from their ward? The latter was an idea brought before the Eureka City Council council earlier this year, but it failed to gain traction.

In the meantime, Newman said he has been a resident of Eureka for almost 30 years now, and he doesn’t think his prior residence in the Second Ward makes him any less knowledgeable about the issues in the Third.

“It’s close by,” he said of where he used to live. “I understand, pretty much, the needs [in the Third Ward], as well as the rest of the town.”

“The idea behind the current system was more or less to encourage the formation of a diverse council by pulling candidates from five distinct areas of the city.”

The idea behind the current system was to maintain control by people who can afford to campaign city-wide, and to lock candidates (who can’t afford to move) out of running at all. By going back to plurality system, Eureka has increased their unique one-of-a-kind election system’s ability to keep unwanteds off the council. I wonder if the would put a reform measure on the ballot if someone came up with thirty grand?

Be thankful that Mr. Newman is present as an alternative to liar Kuhnel and Green Party fruit loop Manns.

So let me get this straight, little miss fruit loop:

Newman has been living and working in this community for 30 years.

You retired to Eureka about 10 years ago.

Newman running in your turf shows a “lack of respect and understanding for the people here.”

Did you vote for Larry Glass, who is not a Eureka resident but took an in-town address to run for office?

It is no big deal for Newman (a 30 year Eureka resident) to move from I street to E street, probably less than 1/2 mile.

Glass didn’t just “live off Myrtle Ave”, he lived in Bayside, another town completly.

I couldn’t imagine voting for Xandra, she’s a fruitcake. Glad Newman is in the race. Better for all Eurekans.

I made a fool out of myself & i regret the YouTube video i was in i but i made my point . Prior to the election i brought you the truth on each candidate . I never endorsed anyone , just wanted to bring you the truth . Now that a lot of you now know what i knew 4 years ago i look forward to seeing a new Eureka . I’m so glad you voted ” old school ” out of office & brought in ” the new ” . Too bad about LaVallee , Neely & the others screwing up this Town . I wanted to make it better for everyone .

Congratulations , Michael & the rest . I hope you get more money for your job ….a wage nobody can live on .

Best regards to everyone .
