The Hippo Campus

(Feb. 25, 2010)  Editor:

Thank you for your article on College of the Redwoods’ plan to buy Jefferson School to replace its current downtown branch campus (“Schoolyard Scrap” Feb. 18). The neighbors of the school site are adamantly opposed to their homes being severely impacted by the increased traffic, bumper-to-bumper parked cars, constant noise and disruption that will result from having a college campus next door.

This area is not “downtown,” but is a family neighborhood, complete with historic homes and no commercial buildings. To put a branch campus here will make life miserable for the nearby residents, devalue their property and degrade their quality of life.

According to Eureka City Schools Superintendent Gregg Haulk, there are plenty of neighbors “absolutely thrilled” with this nightmarish prospect. Oh, really? Names, please. No one living in the area is in favor of CR’s intention to turn the neighborhood into an extension of the busy city center, including a rerouted city bus line and a large parking lot. There are plenty of areas north of Seventh Street to put a true downtown branch campus. Right in the middle of a densely populated family neighborhood is not an appropriate location for this kind of enterprise.
