Correction to Water Boarding

(Oct. 23, 2008)  A story in last week’s issue on the various races for seats on the board of directors of the Humboldt Bay Municipal Water District (“Water Boarding,” Oct. 23) contained several errors of fact.

Most significantly, the story misstated the electoral record of Ben Shepherd, a candidate in the district’s Second Division. As pointed out be our correspondents and many others, the story stated that Shepherd has lost five elections to the board of the McKinleyville Community Services District; in fact, Shepherd won those five elections. Also, the story misstated his age: He is 66, not 68.

We reported that Six Rivers Planned Parenthood has endorsed Second District candidate Buzz Webb, which was false. The organization is a non-profit entity and therefore does not endorse candidates for office.

Contrary to what our reporter was told, Second Division candidate Jake Pickering did indeed leave a telephone number and residential address with the Humboldt County Elections Office when signing up for the race, and did not ask the office to keep that information private.

Finally, we concede both the grammatical and procedural points raised by Milt Boyd in the letter above, though we do maintain that the committee’s failure to endorse a candidate in the race was worthy of note.

The Journal deeply regrets the errors, and offers its sincere apologies to all parties concerned.

Heidi Walters is just about the worst writer I have ever encountered. I’m tired of reading articles in the Journal filled with fluff and not much substance or truthful facts. It’s time you let her go.
