“For the first time in many, many years, Humboldt County’s unemployment rate had just slipped beneath the state average,” stated the Jan. 22 edition of “The Town Dandy,” referring to the Dec. 2008 figures collected by the California Employment Development Department. In point of fact, this turns out not to be the case. A review of EDD non-seasonally adjusted numbers dating back to 1990 shows that Humboldt County’s unemployment rate slipped beneath the state average a number of times between 1991 and 1996, and again between 2001 and 2004, mostly in the late summer/early fall months. Looking at annual rather than month-by-month figures, though, Humboldt County’s mean unemployment rate has indeed been higher than the state average in each of the last 18 years (with the exception of 2002, when the county and the state tied at 6.7 percent).

Video jockey Rhett Bice’s name was misspelled in the Jan. 22 edition of “The Hum.” In addition, Bice ended up not performing at that “Pressure Drop” gig at Empire Squared.

A preview of last week’s concert by musician Joe Craven in the Jan. 29 issue was misattributed to Arts Editor Bob Doran. In fact, the preview was written by Journal spring intern Julianna Boggs.

The Journal regrets the errors.
