What a Waste

Editor:

Thank you for the Week in Weed column by Grant Scott-Goforth. It gives citizens an honest look at issues not covered elsewhere.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels really safe knowing that the sheriff's department is spending thousands on what could be done by county code enforcement ("Marijuana Notables in the Year's First Big Raid," June 25). Are they even aware that there are strict regulations that cover environmental damage and other building and land use violations? Why not let the county levy fines, which is money coming in, instead of raids, which is money going out?

Did the sheriff's departments of Humboldt, Mendocino and Trinity counties miss the memo? One of the main reasons voters in California wish to legalize cannabis is the appalling waste of taxpayer dollars on these ridiculous raids when there are people who are victimized by more serious crimes on a daily basis. Including crimes committed by sheriff's deputies.

Thank you again for an honest look at the issues that affect us all.
