Spare Some Victorians?

Editor:

Thanks for Heidi Walters' article about Orick ("Waiting for Miley," April 1).

I got to know the good people of Orick well over the 20-plus years I provided bookmobile service there, working for the Humboldt County Library. I was constantly impressed by the essential irony of the place: The world's finest lumber was removed from this spectacular environment over a century, and no significant buildings were left behind. When the timber industry died in towns like Eureka,  Arcata, Fort Bragg and Mendocino, interesting old buildings made of the local redwood remained to give the locals a base for a tourism economy. Not so in Orick's case. No timber baron homes, no charming bungalows.

I propose that any historic wooden structures slated for demolition or removal anywhere around here be moved to Orick and restored. Add a few new faux Victorians and Craftsman cottages and the tourists might have more cause to linger.
