Slack Tide

Captain Bitts loved to crow:
"The mud is in!"
As we labored on the Pelican
And lied like sailors.

We were always ready
To run with the tide,
Oblivious to the pain
That open seas can deliver.

We were sworn enemies
Destined for adventure.

Republicans sat with Democrats.
Once Blue Collar kids
Cajoled behind our President,
Looking lost at sea.

They just didn't seem ready
To tell us the truth:
"You have lived like drunken sailors
And now must feel some pain."

There are many more
Adventures to pursue,
Than what lingers
In the minds of men.

I know what Captain Bitts would say.
