River Otters, Minks and Weasels

Come hear about local river otters, minks, and weasels from Phil Johnston. Friends of the Arcata Marsh is sponsoring this free public lecture starting at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, October 21 at the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center. Phil’s presentation, entitled ““The Diverse & Abundant Weasels of Humboldt County: A naturalist's perspective,” will discuss the abundance, ecology, and behavior of our local mustelid species, with an emphasis on long-tailed weasels, northern river otters, and American minks, all of which call the Arcata Marsh home. This talk will shed light into the secret lives and geographically unique behaviors and adaptations of our local weasels, as well as the historical and current conservation measures in place to manage and protect these species. Phil is a professional wildlife tracker and wildlife biologist, currently running the Hoopa Fisher Project on the Hoopa Valley reservation. He has studied, tracked, and photographed mustelids and other wildlife in Humboldt County and surrounding Northern California areas for 7 years.
