In the June 8 statewide California primary election, 35,937 of Humboldt County's 75,404 eligible voters took the time to fill out some bubbles. Super weak. I know, I know, we're talking about a primary in a midterm election year. Not the most thrilling stuff. So, maybe we'll let the 53 percent who flaked on democracy slide on that one. But November's election is a different story. It matters. Big time.

If you need to be told why the Nov. 2 Election will have a major impact on our future, especially in Humboldt County, maybe alerting you that the deadline to register to vote is Oct. 18 is a futile endeavor. But here it goes:

The deadline to register to vote is Oct. 18.

No excuses, citizen. How do you register? Stop by the DMV. Or your local library. Or City Hall. Hell, if you just call the Humboldt County Elections Office at 445-7678 they'll send a form to your house! For all the voting info you'll ever need check out http://co.humboldt.ca.us/election. ’Cuz trust me, even if you don't know that you love democracy, let me assure you, you do.

You wanna know who else loves democracy? KEET-TV and the Humboldt County League of Women Voters, that's who. Because an informed electorate is better than the alternative, they're teaming up to stage a butt ton of debates between local candidates in Oct. all of them broadcast on KEET Ch. 13 and on KHSU 90.5. Here's the remaining sched:

Wednesday, Oct. 13, at 7:30 p.m.: Humboldt County Supervisorial District 4 candidate's debate with Bonnie Neely and Virginia Bass.

Thursday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m.: Eureka City Council Ward 1 candidates debate with Larry Glass and Marian Brady. Ward 3 candidate's debate with Xandra Manns, Ron Kuhnel and Mike L. Newman.
