No Need to Start from Seed

Editor:

I was pleased to see encouragement for the idea of seed swaps in the Journal last week, but disappointed that the article failed to note that there is already a long-established annual seed exchange in Humboldt!

In the article "Organize Your Own Seed Swap," (March 26) Heather Jo Flores encourages readers to "Look online and ask around in your area about anyone who has organized seed swaps in the past. It is better to help with a central, large swap than to have a bunch of small ones that aren't connected. If you can't find anyone who is already organizing swaps in your community, then you are ready to move on to Step 2."

Fortunately, there is already such a central, large swap for our area: the Humboldt Permaculture Guild's annual Seed & Plant Exchange, now in its 17th year and coming up this weekend! Everyone is welcome to attend this Saturday, March 28, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Arcata Community Center. Bring seeds or plants to share if you have them, but you can take home seeds and plants no matter what you bring. There will be live music, free workshops taught by local experts and a locally sourced lunch available. The event is free and all are welcome.
