Unusual Roses to be Discussed at Humboldt Rose Society Gathering. Eureka High graduate, Ed Kreutzer, visiting family, will provide the program for the coming HRS meeting on Thursday, Oct. 13, 7 p.m. The group meets at Christ Episcopal Church, 15th and H Streets, Eureka, in Lewis Hall, easily accessed from 15th or the church parking lot on 14th. The public is welcome and can bring any questions about the care and maintenance of roses. Members who have received special training from the American Rose Society (Consulting Rosarians) are knowledgeable about the fine points of rose growing. Starting with a gift from his mother in 1981 of the rose "Love, Honor, & Cherish," Ed and his wife, Marianne, now grow about 600 roses of all types. Since many of their roses were ordered from Canada in the 1980's, there are various ones never available in local nurseries. His power point presentation will highlight many of his favorites. "Many of the varieties we grow are not show roses but are great in the garden." They both have been very involved with the Southwestern Oregon Rose Society over the years and are currently president and secretary. Ed and Mariannne's business life has been involved in cattle/dairy ranching and selling as well as retail farm supply and the nursery business in the Myrtle Creek and Coos Bay areas of Oregon, and Ed served in the military during the Vietnam years.
