This has been going on for decades. These properties are and have been attractive nuisances and the neighbors have every right to sue.
I applaud the city for its continuing efforts on behalf of the good citizens of Eureka to rectify this.
I submit that the Squires should seriously consider cashing out their considerable real property holdings and enjoy themselves with the generous profit they would realize. If they're concerned with housing the downtrodden, there are many other avenues to contribute to that effort.
Many of us in Eureka would be delighted to have the opportunity to renovate one of these dilapidated nuisance properties and rent them to responsible people who would be good neighbors at a fair price. I've done just that with another multi-family Victorian not far from these properties, and my tenants are people anybody would enjoy as neighbors and respect the property because it is nice and well kept. And certainly no one has ever had to call police because of my tenants' behavior.
I sincerely ask the Squires to seriously look at divesting and passing on the torch to others. You'd find much interest on the market. Brad Floyd (who I've also consulted in similar matters) can help in your decision and help you lay out a good plan.
