Probably one of the best pieces of journalism, concerning addiction, that I have ever read! Very well done and covers many angles, including the much needed Harm Reduction one. In case anyone interested has missed it, the book 'In The Realm of Hungry Ghosts' is very good and covers many of the deep, personal, psychological problems that precede addiction. I don't agree with everything the book says but...Anyways, in the long run, I think 'tapering' (taper / plateau / taper, 'HAMS' has a good piece about this with alcohol), Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and time are the best courses of action. For some, AA and 'faith-based' programs work. For me, they led to an incredibly horrific cycle of guilt, white-knuckled sobriety, and repeated use that lasted a decade. Thanks again, for such a wonderfully thorough article. Made my day.
Re: “Eureka City Council Approves Controversial Open Space Property Management Plan”
There certainly does seem to be a disconnect between the wealthy business owners and the poor homeless 'travelers' in this city. I always see old, white rich people walking around with this angry / scared look on their face. These are the people that, in my humble opinion, should drop in (just once!) to volunteer at a breakfast or something. There needs to be more understanding, obvs, between the two groups.
