Bombshell? What sort of bombshell? The Thomas Insel move was biological psychiatrist to biological psychiatrist, the American Psychiatric Association is dominated by biological psychiatrists, and it deflected the argument away from critiques based on more fundamental differences in thought and opinion. Does this criticism mean that any of the psychiatrists can put a dent in the selling power of the DSM-5? I wish. As long as DSM classification numbers are used to bill insurance companies, I think not. Psychologists have weakly offered their own critique, colluding with the likes of DSM-IV architect Allen Frances, but all in all, when no controversy is being stirred up, they are aiding and abetting the very efforts they are criticizing. Controversy aside, the book goes out, and it continues to sell like hotcakes, and its unscientific basis just gets swept under the rug. This same unscientific basis means that people are going to continue to be harmed by this document on a mass scale, and that is more than just sad, it is an abomination.
