As another mother of a transgender child here in Humboldt County I can only send my love, deep sympathy and care to you Allison. I am sooooo sorry that Chloe took her life and that we were not able to help her soon enough. Thank you for reaching out to others and for taking on the cause even in the midst of your own loss. There are many support groups for the parents of transkids that can help (Trans Youth Family Allies, Gender Spectrum, TransKidsFamily and more). We are all working together to secure a safe future for our children.
Hank, I think you and Cristina did a great job laying out the arguments. I've avoided entering into the public debate on this issue, as I think it is a tempest in a teapot, but the position you articulate is largely consistent with what I've expressed in private. The good folks in our environmental community need to focus their energies and credibility on bigger threats, such as the pattern of future land use (and conversion of resource lands) being debated in the county general plan update.
Let's see—George W. Bush's massive tax cuts and war machine destroyed the Clinton budget surplus. No “rainy day” budget surplus any more. Huge increase in government spending on war. Meanwhile the libertarian ideologues dismantled bank regulation and oversight.
Obama inherits a mess — massive budget deficit, the Great Recession, and a banking crisis. He pushes through a stimulus bill that from a fiscal standpoint is small in size relative to the George W. Bush war machine, and pushes for a return to reasonable bank regulation.
So, a reasonable person might expect the Tea Party to have emerged as a robust protest against George W's imprudent fiscal management of our federal government. But no. Where was their massive protest against the Bush deficit? Against the Bush war machine that has resulted in thousands of our young people coming home in body bags?
But, as soon as we elect a Democratic (and Black) President, suddenly these Tea Party folks notice that there's a big budget deficit. They attack the man we hired to clean up Bush's mess.
Frankly, I have zero respect for these Tea Party folks. No consistency, no real intellectual honesty. They just hate to see anybody other than a right-winger running our federal government, and they can't concede.
Congratulations to Sims, Herring, and Doran for becoming part owners of the NCJ. And congratulations to Hodgson for finding solid folks for her succession plan. Good news for all of us who value reading the NCJ each week.
