That's the nice thing about Celtic music: it's pretty much not subject to this particular evil because most of it is so old that it's in the public domain, and the newer stuff is written by the bands that play it, so my advice to venues who want live music is to hire Celtic bands. You'll never have to pay out a fee again. (Call me, I'm friends with several up in Oregon and my wife, a former DJ of a Celtic show on KZSC, is friends with some from the Santa Cruz area).
Why is it that the Co-Op is spending MY MONEY (I'm a member) to hire a right wing cadre of lawyers to defend itself against those awful mean Union workers? Well guess what? I didn't sign up for that. I signed up for a place where I could by high quality food at reasonable prices, and where the workers were treated with respect, paid well, and enjoyed great benefits. If the Co-Op can't deliver this, than Eureka Natural Foods is just up the street. They may not be Union (there's not a single business is this county that shouldn't be) but their prices are sometimes much better. But this Co-Op is not run like any other Co-Op I've been a member of, which is very disconcerting to me. I say this to you - board members that I elected -- if you don't treat the Union right, if you don't call off the hounds, you will lose a lot of members. People who belong to Co-Ops tend to be Progressive/Liberal lefty types. This board sounds like a bunch of right wing Repub-litarians to me. And I can't stomach that.
More and more I'm starting to question whether these local OWS folk are for real. None of the protestors in any of the other cities have assaulted the media -- they embrace the media (it's the police who assault people with cameras). Also, in all the other cities OWS folk have their own cameras, and cell phones and computers etc. There doesn't seem to be a tech presence here like there is everywhere else. Why don't they want to be on camera? What are they hiding? Who are they really working for? Are they trying to discredit the movement?
I’m totally with this. Corporatism (really, it’s Fascism) is the main cancer that is eating away at the world. Maybe OWS will awaken the masses.
But, I have to think that our local contingent is slightly misguided. Occupying the Arcata plaza or the Courthouse lawn isn’t saying anything, because Humboldt County and especially Arcata are pretty sympathetic. If you want to make a real impact try occupying/demonstrating at the branches of Wells Fargo, Citibank, Bank of America, or some of the local stock brokerages. They are the ones that caused all of the troubles!
