If local newspapers routinely covered this issue, and the other issues relevant to the entire half of America currently at risk of poverty, the majority of eligible voters who never participate might actually start to notice candidates and their positions.
Don't you mean, "failed to respond to the survey by a deadline, or press-time"?
And those making this very legitimate distinction and concern are few!
It is a non-issue for half a nation that refuses participation...and for most voters who typically miss many elections, (ever seen the voter rolls?).
It's a national disgrace that receives no media attention, ie, it doesn't exist.
Keep those election ad-revenues flowing!!! Another "illegitimate election"? Who says?
There's even less outrage at Humboldt State University were 90% of students never vote in campus elections.
With so many students receiving honorary doctorates in apathy, there's little notice by campus administrators and professors.
U.S. graduates will go-forth to join the 50% of eligible Americans who never participate.
The worst tyrannies in history were the ones that no one knew were already in force.
There's nothing stranger than truth.
Another reason we hear/read so little...?
This is a legitimate story that could have been reported many months ago, (but only by the NCJ!).
This close to the election there will be many fools crying conspiracy because they couldn't find Virgina Bass on their June 5th ballot.
Except when it comes to their own well-heeled citizens who's messes poisoned the land around our bay, that saturated our city in poverty wage big boxes, and the sprawl few can afford. Those good church-going club-members who harvest our infrastructure far, far beyond its capacity, until our streets are unsafe and our sewers empty into the bay during crab season.
Tourists staying in the Eureka Inn only need to peek outside to see another good-ol'-boy's 14-year old blight getting uglier and uglier each day.
God forbid that elected officials who swore an oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution, should protect those rights for the worst victims of America's New Gilded Age... while the biggest mess-makers laugh all the way to the bank.
When the lawsuit is filed against The Terrible Four supervisors, I will be there.
