The FBI began high-altitude, drones over Northern California's Pot Industry.
The Pentagon began flying high-altitude, unarmed drones over Northern California skies daily, American military officials said, in hopes of collecting information to turn over to local law enforcement agencies and the FBI.
Other administration officials said a Homeland Security drone helped authorities find several suspects linked to the March 15 killing of a United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement Immigration agent in Trinity County.
President Obama formally agreed to continue the surveillance flights during a White House meeting yesterday, June 3 presiding through Humboldt, Trinity, and Mendocino counties. The American assistance has been kept secret because of legal dues and the heated political sensitivities there about sovereignty, the officials said.
Before the outbreak of drug violence in Northern California that has left more dead in the past four years, such an agreement would have been all but unthinkable, they said.
