Re: “Point-In-Time

what we live in is not civilization. Truly civilized people do not have prisons, poverty at third world standards, children beaten and molested or business owners that rule the government and police who secretly back the illegal drug market. Homeless people exist because of a sick society, they are the result of greed, bigotry and prejudice. No one wants a house given to them with strings attached that demand people live up to the lifestyle of the givers. What people need is to be able to afford housing that is made available to them in city and county planning. Right now people in poverty have not the ability to pay the exorbitant rent that home owners demand because they know they can get it from students wealthy parents or people retiring to the area. If you hate meth then stop the supply instead of blaming the victims of "the Drug War". This county is especially ignorant and facist in it's socialization because we've been pitted against each other by old style family money and position. This is a corrupt county that needs to come out of the closet and into the light of day so we can move on to a healthy environment to raise our children and heal our people. Housing First!

Re: “Salzman Sues Arcata Over Panhandling Law

Do none of you see that this is an economic housing problem, homeless people do not choose to be homeless, rather it is the opposite, they have no choice. I'm speaking from experience and academically. There has to this day not been a cure for poverty and as long as there is prejudice, greed and a whole host of other social sins we will continue seeing homeless people. If you don't like seeing people wasting away in the throws of addictions and depravity on your streets then put together affordable housing so that they can suffer out of your eyesight!!! A TENT IS AFFORDABLE HOUSING!

Re: “Want To Be On The Eureka City Council...

In our current system it is not worth my time to enter into city government. More can be done at a grassroots level for those who really need representation than with city personnel that are unable to make the changes that are necessary for the poor to have better lives. Mean spirited people with arrogant and small minded ideas are too entrenched in this area to make any REAL changes effective. It's not moxy that is needed, it's justice.

Re: “Family on the Corner

The Long and Howard families don't care about their children's children, they are the reason that this family stood on a street corner for so long. Why do you think that there are so many foster children homeless these days? Yes Cheyanna was Vi Longs foster child (that she only wanted for the money). All of you are judging people by what you know and it shows your ignorance when you criticize this family. They need a REAL chance and real is hard to find. God bless them!

Re: “Grovies: CALL TO ARMS

The world we live in is so disconnected from nature that we argue about whether the trees or trucks have the right of way on the planet. Industry has encroached on enough of the planet, to allow continuance when we've seen such devastation already from human planning for corporate greed is just plain stupidity. Richardson is a State Park. The agreement in this park is that it not have expansion of roads. It is a treaty with the original owners (not GOD who owns it all) that industry wants and plans on breaking by widening the road through Richardsons Grove. Environmentalists didn't just pull this out of the hat as a way to get glory, that's what the Kinetic Sculpture Race is about, no, it is about promises and what is right and good for ALL, not just those who will make a buck.

Re: “Fighting Floyd Squires

Squires gets his rent paid by Humboldt County welfare. At Blue Heron the rent is $675. to $1,000. for a room with a bathroom, NO KITCHEN! Why does the county allow this? There is not enough affordable housing and if Squires gets shut down the homeless population will grow exponentially. Tent Cities are growing in popularity across the nation (see Pacific Coast Homeless report) and for all practical reasons this area is perfectly suited to camping. Tribes with teepees, huts and white man in tents survived and flourished here many years ago and with modern outdoor gear we can consider a campground as transitional sheltering until more appropriate housing can be made available. The elderly are the fastest growing group of the homeless population. We must do the right thing and put our resources toward homes for ALL. Peace, Love and a Tent. The county has had plans for an affordable, compassionate and practical campground since 1993-4. Instead of following the plans of Bonnie MacGregor and The Homeless Task-force from 1991-93? which included The MAC, campgrounds and jobskills training, the current plan of paying large amounts of money to local motels and other "flop houses" has been the counties "superior" plan. We could have been a leader in effectively meeting the needs of affordable housing during this economic crisis. Instead we are like every other mean city that treats its poor with disdain and criminalizes them for a profit.
The times they are a changin and those who have assisted in the oppression of the poor will eat the bitter fruit of their labors.
