Richard makes good points as usual, but I was sorry to see him cite the estimate of a $300 million tourist industry. For a while it had seemed that the visitors bureau had stopped using the ridiculously inflated estimates, which are developed by consultants to the tourism industry who've never researched Humboldt County's tourism market.
One example of their hubris: they've estimated that tourist dollars account for about two-thirds of restaurants' income. For more, see my 2003 North Coast Journal investigation:
