GASP! It is a shame we don't have more micro-distilleries around here. I just took a trip to Portland's Distiller's Row, and--wow. Those guys are having fun.

I know why it takes two extra weeks. Generally, magazines are shipped out straight from the printer on pallets to big city post offices, where they are opened up and distributed. Lots of magazines are "co-palleted," which means that Sports Illustrated and Rolling Stone might go on the same pallet if they come from the same printing or distribution facility. But if there aren't enough subscribers in one area to make up a pallet, or if the magazine isn't printed at a printer where co-pallets are an option, they come all the way here one at a time, as regular mail, and it takes longer.

That's probably more information than you really wanted about magazine distribution.

And are there incentives in place for the contractor to finish early or on time?

I'm less interested in how many flights got canceled and more concerned about the late flights that caused many of us to miss connections. After all, we're not flying to San Francisco, for the most part--we're headed somewhere else. Just because the plane left Arcata the day it was supposed to does not mean people got where they were going the day they were supposed to.

And as for people not checking the county website--the point is that the airport should have set up some sort of communication system travelers could use. A website, an email list, Twitter, a recorded phone message--create something, then advertise it to the public. Put up signs in the airport. Do PSAs. Etc. There are ways to keep travelers updated; the airport hasn't done it.
