Re: “'Unfit for a Free Society'

hmmmm my heart is broken many ways feeling all sides and instead of punish punish throw him/her in prison for life, we should ask ouselves how did this happen? i too think when people use drugs especially not having spirit in right place not taught given love, well others can control manipulate take advantage of these situations. I help raise and grew up with over 200 foster children, my foster/adopted mother Vicki Brown took in many probation kids. most/ALL ran cause the life given to them was to "normal' they run or rather go back to juvinille hall cause thats all they knew, kinda like asking ourselves, "why does she go back to that guy who beats her?" I ran away with art music my dad gave me. Im not defending Bodhii just know he grew up in a tough world and in year of 1995 i know my sibilngs, every foster child, everyone in juvinille hall was put on ridilyn...i was secretly given paxil, colonapin its no wonder i went down dark roads due to present past system failing us, but as an individual i cross the bridge to brighter times to share my experience and truths, hoping for a brighter future maybe part of the blame is within the system of quickly treating with drugs cause its easier and cheaper, a bunch of guinni pigs. LOOK...85-95 and NOW foster care... i see so many times the children who were not adoptable out, i want to cry but true...went back home to non functionble parents, i cry, the ones like myself struggle to hold onto our children. a cruel judge mental world so quick to judge and not even think of all the dynamics. DRUGWAR is to blame we are all to blame. I love you DAD, Christina(wish i stayed blessed(mother of 2 boys 3&4..sometimes we stay cause such loving art collective, i looking for safe family, having my own apartment at time... i did not sleep there that night leaving a few hrs before scene...sometimes i wonder if i was target water being put in gas tank...parked there...i cry cause somewhere within theres ituitive truth but the system..I cry. Christina laying her head on my shoulder, fall asleep looking for security somewhere within (beautiful caring sweet girl). i remember just meeting sunshine few days before returning to heaven...we enjoyed watching Unico, discovering so much in common in such little time, so smiling. happy confident caring kid. i do not believe even Bodhi knows what happened none of us do untill we begin to peel the onion layers back and face the truths. Please everyone where more connected then we ever can imagine, help your brothers and sisters, really what would jesus do? See a strugelling parent, a distressed person, help them life just isnt about partying and working. I cry cause of ignorance so many quick to say hes black, it was a rape... IGNORANCE. Greed is the root of all evil, FEAR, control, JEALOUS HATERS cause insecurities, BULLIES, parent not there , families torn apart... IT TAKES A WHOLE VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD! START ACTING LIKE A COMMUNITY, a tribe its the first HOMEROOT CHAKRA at age 5 we identify ourself with a tribe, some dont have untill its too late. My heart goes out to all of Humboldt excpecially the children caught in the crossfire and the veterans..(foster children of the drug war since civil war the 80s and now! we can change.Lamplighter rainbow warrior. Legalize weed we might begin to heal, make revenue... STATE WELLNESS PROGRAM. They are advertising foster care on street corners of parks and at farmers market. Wake the fuck up! you all matter especially our children of the future. love peace UNITY harmony beauty vibrations creation... spirit of the people is more powerful than mans technology and when people recognize they're power, the power to CHANGE than ANYTHING is possible. I love you Christina and ALAN.

"Anyone who has ever owned a business will tell you that local businesses will have no choice but to lay off workers and raise prices."

Either Mr. Fullerton missed the editorial by a retired Eureka business owner favoring "R", or he thinks one more lie won't matter after all his other claptrap was exposed by the NCJ in this excellent report.

Thank you!

"Knowing squat about business" is more than having a secretary, or a rental.

Re: “Former Sheriff's Sgt. Charged with On-Duty Rape

What happened to innocent until proven guilty?? The women have been in jail and made a deal to get out??....... took almost a year to file charges??..... Something is not right with this picture??? Their is more to the story, a lot more... I think it would be humane to wait for a guilty sentence before anyone is castrated or planted in the dirt... Due process people, everyone good or bad is entitled to it....

Re: “$12/hr

If Measure R is passed it will set the bar too high to even work on a countywide initiative. It will leave a few with a gain and many looking for more assistance from public assistance to meet higher costs caused by an initiative targeted at a few!

Re: “$12/hr

Vote YES on R.
Raising the minimum wage, CITY by CITY has proven to boost the economy of the increased wage cities, lower unemployment (more jobs!), and help lift working people and families out of poverty. The people who say anything different about raising the minimum wage have no facts or reports to back their gloom and doom claims- only fear.

Measure R will be great for Eureka, and surrounding cities will follow suit. People who say it should be countywide have never made or even talked about an initiative to do so. Measure R will make Eureka more competitive and successful. And the people who work to keep businesses and services going here deserve to live with dignity and, frankly, more money!

Rise up and Raise Our Wages!!

Vote YES on R!

Editorial: Fair Wage Act unfair to city — vote no on R

Proponents of the Fair Wage Act are right in their claim that Measure R, if passed by Eureka's voters, would create an economic boom. It just won't be in Eureka.

Cutten, for example, would experience quite a boom in business as employers flee Eureka city limits.

Measure R would raise the minimum wage to $12 at businesses — including, full disclosure, this newspaper — with 25 or more employees who work at least two hours a week within Eureka city limits. Nonprofits would be excluded for the first 18 months. If passed, the measure would go into effect 90 days after election results were certified. It also contains a built-in annual cost-of-living increase.

In principle, it's a noble idea. In practice, without additional measures to ensure economic development in the city, it's a time bomb that would turn Eureka into a commercial ghost town ringed by businesses whose proprietors were smart enough to get out while the getting was good.

Coming on the heels of California's July 1 minimum wage hike, Measure R is too high a jump in too short a time, one that threatens to put Eureka — hardly a thriving commercial metropolis — at further disadvantage. Fearful employers are already drafting contingency plans: where to move, how many jobs to cut.

There is no doubt that the working men and women of Eureka deserve a break. But they don't deserve to have the economic health of their community broken, and that's what Measure R would do.

To put the issue of wages in a historical context, Humboldt County's timber industry — which at its peak employed one out of every two working county residents — began its decline in the 1960s. In the decades since, quality jobs that gave residents a shot at middle class wages right out of high school have evaporated.

Low-paying jobs, in Eureka and across the county, took their place. Today, county government itself and Humboldt State University offer the lion's share of decent employment to anyone who can claw their way past the door. Too many of us are left to cobble together two or three jobs to make ends meet.

Many businesses today, in Eureka and countywide, are living on borrowed time, courtesy of the cash that Humboldt's other renowned industry — black market marijuana — pumps into the local economy. All that money, easily a quarter of the local economy, isn't going to last forever. Not with legalization on the horizon.

It's already hard to make a living in Humboldt County, a virtual island on the North Coast, isolated by distance and underdeveloped infrastructure. Why make an island within an island? Why make it any harder, just for Eureka, just as the pot bubble's about to burst?

If the folks behind Measure R had broadened their efforts countywide, it would be quite a different story.

As is, the Fair Wage Act unfairly singles out Eureka businesses and puts them at an undeserved disadvantage.

Vote no on Measure R.

Re: “$12/hr

I am glad to report I have voted NO on Measure R.

Measure R raises the minimum wage to much to fast. Anyone who has ever owned a business will tell you that local businesses will have no choice but to lay off workers and raise prices. Anyone who tells you differently knows squat about surviving in the local business world. There is a better way to raise the minimum wage without hurting people.

If Measure R passes many people who think they are getting big raises will be surprised to get pink slips instead. Measure R is a job killer.

Chief Mills can't stop doing things well! What a great hire he's been. Sounds like EPD has a great plan in place and is going to get a good captain. Kudos to Chief Mills.

Re: “Free Derby Tickets!

Wilhelmina W. Witchiepoo (H R puffinstuff) isn't not what one would call a "mega" villain so my next thought is khan, as in wrath of, but thats likely also not the genre in question here.

so i best redirect my thoughts to super hero then. does anyone else remember "the greatest american hero"

Re: “Former Sheriff's Sgt. Charged with On-Duty Rape

I am surprised this shitbag is still alive. I would think that family members of the victims would have manned up to bury this POS.
If not them, then fellow Sheriffs should have manned up and planted his ass in the dirt, if for no other reason than it reflects on them negatively.

I for one would not only condone such actions, but would not hold such actions against them in a criminal court. It goes without saying I'd not allow his family or anyone else to sue in civil court.

If one of the victims was my family, there would be no criminal trial. Especially with close to a year to make arrangements.
