Re: “Not Even From Around Here

I just drove the Mattole road from Ferndale into AW Way Campground for a few days, a quick stop into Honeydew for gas and EVERY person who passed us on the road waved. The waves were enthusiastic, consistent and each came with a smile. Was it my classic Ford 4x4 that provoked the locals to be friendly? Did they know of my Portuguese decent from my grandfather and great aunt who immigrated to Ferndale in the 60's? I highly doubt it. Just the most friendly warm folks I've come across in Humboldt. Pordagees, Bulgarians, eastern European who knows. What I can confirm is I had a great experience and felt welcome! Leaving Ferndale when I was a child to return to Humboldt as an adult, all i can say is Thank you!
Great article, LOVE the bridge!

Re: “Prepare for Impact

According to this BS277(yesBS) "law" healthy unvaccinated children are danger for others, but children with HIV and HepB are not? Where is a logic? Or it is long gone from this country?

Re: “Not Even From Around Here

I find the Bulgarians of Humboldt County to be extremely polite and amagable. I think the reason they get a bad rap is because they are good at what they do. Their professionalism in their work is extremely apparent. They take greater risks then their neighbors. Therefore greater reward. All interactions I have had have been pleasant. They might even be willing to help you out as a neighbor if your not a bigot. America is a country of immigrants, it's a melting pot of cultures. If you don't like culture start packing.

Re: “Prepare for Impact

another case of Big business in the commons! Now we are paying taxes for even more poisons and administered on children! It is differently a breach of liberty and the pursuit of happiness! Homeopathy worked just as well as vaccines back in the day~ read your history about vaccines and Homeopathy~ so they should have that alternative! yet it is medical and military influence all the way through school and college. I remember how frustrated i got at recruiters at my sons High School being allowed to recruit but people coming to talk about why not to go military got kicked off school grounds.
water, school, streets, parks are some of the commons and would best be kept minutly governed, and pure/clear of big business influence.
If fluoride is so great then just send me a bottle and I will add to my own water, if vaccines are so great then I would be vaccinated..... what is great and increases life sells itself!
Also we are sold that there is just this one option from the world that is selling them and pushing them. The same thing is done with cancer~ surgery chemo and radiation or just go home and see. Yet people are curing themselves of cancer and more in many ways out of the medical system. again this reeks of big business ! same as c sections~ and the quickness of many surgical procedures! It is the system not the doc!
let people be free~ that was the whole point of this country~ to end tyranny~ this is right up there with Fascism and Dictator behavior~
thats my feelings on it all at this moment!

Re: “The Death of Jeannie Newstrom

Bressler, a Nurse Aid is being prosecuted as we speak after a doctor and a Nurse signed a release stating there was nothing wrong with Mrs. Jeannie Newstrom upon release to Frys Nursing home. Is that not a travesty and an attempt to transfer blame away from a Doctor and a Registered Nurse

Re: “Prepare for Impact

The real reason for this law was not because of the Disneyland outbreak, but because the senior scientist William Thompson who worked on the main study exonerating vaccines from causing autism, came forward in 2014 to say there was fraud at the CDC when the study was conducted. Congressman Posey of Florida is working on getting him a subpoena to come testify before congress. If vaccines are mandated, whatever is revealed in congress won't matter because parents won't be able to opt out of vaccines. I was in Sacramento when this law was waiting approval in the Assembly education committee and watched live when it was up for a vote in the Senate health committee. I challenge anyone to watch (it should be on you tube) this and see how the chair, Liu, made a mockery of the legislative system by basically telling Senator Pan he should withdraw his bill from the committee because he didn't have enough votes for it to pass and reintroduce it at a later time. This law would have died right there. But no, at the next Senate health committee, some Senators had been removed and new ones were there, and guess what, these new ones were all in favor of sb277. This is an outrage and joke on our legislative system. Think about it and research it. Which is, btw, all parents who stopped vaccinating are asking. Think and research vaccines, and once you have all the facts, then decide. Because parents certainly don't have all the facts. Hearing that vaccines are safe and effective by doctors who read the Thompson study (which is fraudulent and show that yes, there is a link between vaccine and autism!), doesn't grant them all the facts. It take a lot of courage to step out of your comfort zone and objectively look at this issue. And it's agonizing for many parents who are torn between the thought of endangering their kids if they don't vaccinate or if they do. At the end of the day, the only answer to this is to research vaccine ingredients, side effects, ask for the vaccine insert (not the typical one-pager about why vaccines are necessary, that is given by pediatrician. No, the actual vaccine insert. And then ask questions and see how your doctor reacts. You may be surprised. One last thing regarding having kids under-vaccinated infecting others... Kids with HIV are allowed in school and their privacy is guarded. You will never know who they are. And yes, it can be transmitted by blood contact, not just sexually. I would say that is a serious consideration for not only the immunocompromised but all kids. So thinking that your children are "safe" in school because now all kids will have to be vaccinated is simply an illusion. Research vaccines. Watch the movie Vaxxed! It's a best seller on amazon now. Those 4 bucks will change your perspective in this issue forever. All it takes is to have an open mind and have the courage to question what you thought you knew for sure. Step out of your comfort zone.

Re: “Not Even From Around Here

Yet again Linda, your gentle touch belies the razor sharp edge of the journalistic knife you wield with the precision of a surgeon. You have that rare ability to see the real behind the assumed truths that so many of us find easier to accept. You then present it in a manner that enlightens and educates without rancor or malice, with sensitivity and unwavering commitment to that truth. All communities have raw spots caused by a continued acceptance of assumed truths that are not valid but nonetheless commonly accepted by that community because the assumption is more comfortable and less threatening than the unvarnished truth. We guard our assumptions jealously, they provide justification for the prejudges we carry but won't acknowledge. It might be apt to note that forty some years ago, the communities and established families of the Mattole were faced with the invasion of their home ground by another group of foreigners that lived in ways that were reputed to be a threat to the established ways of the existing Mattole society. Fortunately the 'old timers' saw past the assumption of those newly arrived oddballs representing a dangerous, uncontrollable, and uncivilized threat, shook their hand, sold them some land-on an owner carry handshake-and taught them how to dig waterbars. And I've lived here ever since.
Linda, you demonstrate a maturity of perception and an unwavering commitment to fair, just and honest treatment of those uncomfortable raw spots in our communities that is so needed in today's world. But then I think I know where you learned a lot of that so it shouldn't surprise me.. Again thank you for saying what needs to be said so well, with so much compassion. You are one hell of a journalist and our Mattole community is much richer for your efforts.

Re: “A Waiting Game

The Samoa housing expansion will have unmitigated negative impacts on Eureka's deadly traffic.

The Highway 1 "Safety Corridor" will start becoming inundated by high tides in 2 to 3 decades and will be completely submerged in 80 years.

Loosening coastal dependent zoning restrictions would be another step backward towards an era that left the entire bay wrapped in job-killing brownfields.

I hope the selection is NOT from my county, all our supervisors and their appointees are lackeys for the short term greed of the development industry.

Re: “Prepare for Impact

Children with IEPs are exempt from SB277: "(h) This section does not prohibit a pupil who qualifies for an individualized education program, pursuant to federal law and Section 56026 of the Education Code, from accessing any special education and related services required by his or her individualized education program." So, if a child's IEP states they are to receive instruction in a public school setting, they can attend public school, vaccinated or not.

Re: “Prepare for Impact

From the article "the bill mandated a medical treatment for children that some fear has adverse health impacts"

It's not just the "fear" of "some". A real journalist (something we have precious few of any more) would know that there is no question that vaccines can and do cause harm. Let me correct that phrase for you;

"the bill mandated a medical treatment for children that in some cases has severe adverse health impacts"

EVERY medical procedure has risks. Look it up.

Re: “Prepare for Impact

Vaccines have been mandated for decades; removing personal belief or religious exemptions is not about health or even about vaccines. It is about allowing the government to dictate that we must allow whatever they say into our and our children's bodies. That is medical tyranny, assault and a very high violation of freedom and autonomy. It is about really bad people with their own goals.

While vaccination rates have dropped since the exemptions have been threatened, that is just the price that moneygrubbing, power-hungry tyrants put upon us all. Vaccination rates were high enough for the herd immunity; don't know whether that will remain the case now that we've had interference.

I've noticed that the HPV vaccine, whether Gardasil or another brand, is up for becoming mandatory. What reasoning does marketing science declare for this? Herd immunity can't be the excuse for forcing this vaccine that supposedly prevents an easily curable cancer - cervical cancer.

Re: “Prepare for Impact

If people believe so strongly in these vaccines, and there effectiveness, then why can a vaccinated child still contract a disease for which they have been vaccinated for? And the horrible outbreak which was used as a scare tactics to push this bill resulted in how many death? Oh yeah none, seems pretty cut and dry to me, it's all about the money from top to bottom. I went from kindergarten through college without any vaccines and never once did I get sick or infect any of the thousands or peers I came in contact with over the years.
