Re: “Top o' the Hops

According to the Humboldt County Trends Report, we are among the least healthy people in the state and nation with statistics 2 and 3 times worse. Alcohol/drug overdose is our leading cause of unintentional death.

Re: “Polar Extremes: How We View Ourselves Vs. How the World Views Us

Humboldt's a rare place in that many rich and poor are visually indistinguishable. The hills don't breed hoity-toity attitudes about having manicured lawns and polished vehicles, primped hair or clean clothes, it's really very cool like that. In that regard, I think less publicity, and even bad publicity, is good for the real permanent locals like myself who don't welcome the corporatized homogenization that inevitably comes with urbanization. Viva laid back!

Re: “Rumble in the Redwoods

These people are heroes.

Unless we can teach our children the importance of frivolously burning up the last of the cheap fuel as quickly as possible, they might not see alternative energy developed in their lifetime.

Re: “Watch: Flatmo Plays the Fillmore

I don't care what Mr. Flatmo's critics say about the "obscenity" of prolific welding resources and labor used to create a frivolous, carbon-belching monstrosity "El Pupo" during the sixth largest extinction event on Earth that's being rapidly accelerated by carbon-caused climate change.

The U.S. is no longer an entrepreneurial manufacturing leader and our celebrity culture is offering today's youths an opportunity for a critical diversion from their malaise and decades of public divestment, outsourcing, record gaps in income, opportunity and reward. Celebrities want our forgiveness, they're not asking for permission!

Do we want more depressed youths, or do we want them wearing their favorite singer's logo at "El Pupo" concerts, to pour open their lives and data on Facebook and to adopt Apple as a lifestyle?

Celebrities are our kid's institutions!

Instead of a robust public education we have Zuckerberg's rescue of public schools, instead of a vibrant literary culture we have Oprah's book club, instead of investments in public health we have the Gates Foundation.

Celebrities aren't inviting our children to be just like them, celebrity's success is based on leaving everyone else behind.

A small price to pay to allow the rich to save America.

Re: “Humboldt Style: Everybody Goes to Rick's

No one can reasonably expect a few folks dressed as Nazis to raise any eyebrows in Eureka.

Re: “COSMOSpolitan

I agree that science is very important but it makes no sense whatsoever to waste public subsidies, facilities and student fees focused on promoting and facilitating a celebrity at $50,000/hour.

HSU was just rated "number-one" in academic divestment in the CSU system by the Ca. Faculty Association while administrators get big salary increases and entertainment is fully funded?

Re: “UPDATED: Drunk/Social Historian

"That's what a lot of comics do: travel, collect stories and report back on the human condition," he said. "I'm a culturally investigative journalist."

Future generations will understand that our self-indulgent travel habits only added to global warming. Travel reveals little additional knowledge about the "human condition", it merely reinforces the world-view you left home with.

Without Colbert and Stewart the field is wide open for satirists to feed the starving masses with the only source of real news modern media tolerates.

Entertainment, joy, energy, food, love...were always accessible within every human community.

We only lacked the proper education.

Re: “So Long, Sewell Gallery

Someone needs to investigate how it's possible to have so many empty storefronts while the cost of renting remains overpriced.
