I like your column. A lot. I moved to Humboldt when I was 15; I came from the south, and brought my accent with me. I was the kid who talked funny and had the long hair. It wasn't an easy place to move to, as is the case with many other small towns I reckon, but by the time I graduated from EHS, Eureka felt like home. I was involved in the local music community (which it was-and hopefully still is), primarily in an all original band called Radio Sex, but played in a couple different bands throughout my time up there. I was lucky to be in an area with so many amazing musicians, and even more fortunate to be able to play with many of them. Your column takes me back to that time, and I'd like to thank you for that. Today's column took me right out to Trinity Lake; it wasn't gangsta rap back then, but it was DEFINITELY the same dude: tank top, flip flops and either Vaurnet's or Ray-Bans...thanks for the stroll...
Actually, Andy, a few Yokels are playing at the Festival, and there's no distress among them. I guess you could say it's a festival for Folks who like to play music for Folks. And, of course, a celebration of the rich musical diversity in our lovely Humboldt County home.
Steve Irwin (Yokels, Delta Nationals, TimberRidge Boys)
Journalism probably does teach that. Sadly, I don't even consider myself a journalist but rather a music fan who sometimes forgets when to use a comma and a semicolon. To your point however, I wasn't made aware what "BPBS" stood for either until just recently and that is "Beast, Please Be Still" which I'm told by the organizer is a name of a Datura Blues song if memory serves correct.
I only hope the NCJ (North Coast Journal) doesn't consider me a journalist either, otherwise my time at this publication will probably be brief :)
Thanks for reading.
(Not a) Journalist
Am I missing something? You mention the BPBS Fest a few times but you never define the acronym. Doesn't journalism teach you to define an acronym on its first use?
I enjoyed the Cliff Dallas write up, but I certainly wouldn't label it outlaw country.
Love this article. I've been looking for a local choir with no luck. Do you know of one that isn't a church choir and doesn't require you to be great?
Thanks Nalini! If folks make it even halfway through the article, I cash my paycheck with pride!
Good writing Andy -- I actually read the whole thing!
These comments are in reverse order.....
But thanks for a story about a local musician!
Also, that's not Buddy R and the Rip it Ups in the photo. Not sure what band that is or why that photo is there.
"Really, playing the blues as a white boy? Kids, don't try it at home (or god forbid in public)." I don't like to think in racial terms, but there are/were plenty of great "white" blues players, including Buddy of course. There was this guy named Stevie Ray Vahn, for example. He is arguably the best blues guitar player of all time. Also, Robbin Ford, Curtis Salgado, Tommy Castro, Johnny Winter, Charlie Musselwhite - just to scratch the surface! And locally, don't forget Jim Lahman and Andy Whitman...
Good piece, thanks.
"go figure"??? Maybe awesome little independent venues operating on shoe string budgets, like the sanctuary, should charge an arm and a leg for admission outright, so as to be spared your snide jabs when "promoting" them? Five bucks to see a show at the sanctuary is a great deal. Great music, great people, great venue, great price.
"Whomever (you) plagiarized" would be the Bible, Ecclesiastes 3. Or maybe you're thinking of The Byrds, "Turn, Turn, Turn."

Whom ever has written lies about Nonie Jones Bishop yourway off base. Nonie has lung cancer and conjestive heart failure. If Nonie has to wear a hair piece and or wig,its due to her treatment. So readers whom ever wtote the bull about her, needs a big ass wooping.
My band Graffiti played Summer Arts around 1990. A great time was had by all. My favorite memory was two pairs of ospreys diving into the lake to catch fish to feed to their young in nearby nests.
