Re: “UPDATE: Judge Allows Budget Motel Evictions to Proceed

The City Of Eureka is getting pretty good at taking people and moving them from bad situations to even worse situations, while forcing those people into even more dependency upon government. Beats the heck out of bringing living-wage jobs to the area and HEALING healthcare that doesn't just turn people into pain-filled addicts who are conditioned to see drugs as the only "answer"...

Re: “Service Call

Heidi is one of the best people I know. I have known her for two decades and she is as real and authentic now, as she wa the first time I met her. More than this, Heidi has a passion and heart for people, especially those who experience barriers to access and have difficulty overcoming those on their own. Heidi will make an excellent city council woman. Eureka is lucky to have her!

Re: “Profits over People?

Venezuela forced businesses to stay open and operate at a loss. How did that work out for them? And the argument that a company is making money elsewhere in the state and should accept whatever profit margin this region deems appropriate is ludicrous. They should be allowed to close and move on. A company is not responsible for your loved ones--YOU are!

Re: “Service Call

She is incredible! I was so impressed by Heidi as she quickly responded to the Humboldt Builders Exchange's request to meet with her regarding our safety concerns! She is a great listener and cares about making positive changes in our community!

Re: “A 'Moral Obligation': Eureka Celebrates Family Shelter Opening

"Humboldt County 4th District Supervisor Virginia Bass refers to challenges Chinn's outreach faced from local business owners and the city of Eureka as a 'dark time in our recent history.'"

Local business owners are still fighting the tools that get affordable housing and SRO's built, ie, policies, ordinances and fees that make temporary group shelters obsolete.

Celebrating a temporary shelter while fighting humane policies and turning independent motel housing into boarded-up firetraps is reprehensible.

Re: “Mold School

I find it incredibly hypocritical that the government that offers monitory rewards for whistle blowing against private parties, will jail or fire those that whistle blow against them.

Re: “Mold School

I feel that if this had happened in Eureka there would have been a lot more investigating on the part of our local media. Teachers and staff are electing to leave the district rather than continue under this man, qualified people that KTJUSD can't afford to lose.

Re: “No Charges in Fatal June Crash

Another Paul Gallegos in our D.A. Office. What a sad and pathetic world we live in. The only thing between Maggie Fleming is they probably had the girl tested for Alcohol and Drugs. When I lost my 2 daughters and there friend in an auto Accident almost 13 years ago the male driver of that car was never drug or Alcohol tested. His family has a history of drug abuse. He got off with just a slap on the wrist for killing 3 people and there was almost a 4th death in this accident. The kid was on a Suspended License and had no Insurance. So we didn't see squat not that that mattered. What mattered was seeing that Justice was served but Paul Gallegos could not prosecute him because he didn't feel like it and we later Learned the judge in the case Christopher Wilson once dated his Aunt. We never learned that till the trial was over tho. The judge should have at least excused himself for. Conflict of interest. Yes I did go to the Bar Association in San Francisco against the Judge Assocation and was told beings trial was over we couldn't appeal for a new trial. Now we understand how corrupt our justice system really is and the sadest. Part is us Tax Payers are the one who pays there wages. Time for the Laws to Change somehow and quickly.

Re: “What Will Happen to Ma and Pa?

If they are put in one of the local facilities, the survivors--or the family of the deceased--might get a whopping $450.00.

Re: “What Will Happen to Ma and Pa?

"Rockport's relocation plans, which include available space locally for just 44 of the 190 people who would potentially be displaced by the closure."

No room for the elderly, no room for the homeless, no room for the addicted and mentally ill, no room for troubled youths, Humboldt County's legacy of neglect (and negligence) in serving the weakest members of their community continues.

Is there no planning in this county to get housing built for all classes of residents?

Follow the money...

Re: “Prove Them Wrong

Betty's Village must not be allowed to close.

I am glad to hear City Manager Greg Sparks hint a better location with funding is in the works. Without Betty the problem in Eureka would be much worse. We are lucky to have her.

Re: “Prove Them Wrong

This is just a fantastic article, Thad! Of all of the great stuff you've written over the years, I think this might be my favorite :-) Betty Chinn is a force of nature, and your writing has done her justice.

Re: “Prove Them Wrong

"Chinn was largely unwelcome in Old Town."

Actually, Old Town wasn't welcomed in Old Town and many of the same old crony-capitalists running this county wanted it leveled back in the 1950's...but they didn't want to spend their own money...so little has changed.

They still want big government to provide infrastructure and emergency services so they can build their big profit, big homes miles from downtown in the third bailed-out housing bubble in 30 years, while making damn sure no affordable housing tools are enacted by local government.

We wouldn't need to intern the destitute in indignant parking lots and boxcars had this county reserved 1% of its budget for SRO housing construction to be matched with state and federal grants, a more effective, permanent solution that would save the public millions of dollars each year in police and emergency services.

The only problem: Humboldt County government doesn't work in the public interest.

This story should be titled: "Shafted by Communists, Shafted by Capitalists".
