Re: “The Fine Line between Angels and Devils

I enjoyed the Cliff Dallas write up, but I certainly wouldn't label it outlaw country.

Re: “If You Want to Sing Out...

Love this article. I've been looking for a local choir with no luck. Do you know of one that isn't a church choir and doesn't require you to be great?

Re: “Getting Out

Thanks Nalini! If folks make it even halfway through the article, I cash my paycheck with pride!

Cheers,
Andy

But thanks for a story about a local musician!

Re: “The Real Shit Will Rip You Up

Also, that's not Buddy R and the Rip it Ups in the photo. Not sure what band that is or why that photo is there.

Re: “The Real Shit Will Rip You Up

"Really, playing the blues as a white boy? Kids, don't try it at home (or god forbid in public)." I don't like to think in racial terms, but there are/were plenty of great "white" blues players, including Buddy of course. There was this guy named Stevie Ray Vahn, for example. He is arguably the best blues guitar player of all time. Also, Robbin Ford, Curtis Salgado, Tommy Castro, Johnny Winter, Charlie Musselwhite - just to scratch the surface! And locally, don't forget Jim Lahman and Andy Whitman...

Re: “You Never Give Me Your Money

"go figure"??? Maybe awesome little independent venues operating on shoe string budgets, like the sanctuary, should charge an arm and a leg for admission outright, so as to be spared your snide jabs when "promoting" them? Five bucks to see a show at the sanctuary is a great deal. Great music, great people, great venue, great price.

Re: “Welcome Students!

"Whomever (you) plagiarized" would be the Bible, Ecclesiastes 3. Or maybe you're thinking of The Byrds, "Turn, Turn, Turn."

Re: “Bruised and Content

Whom ever has written lies about Nonie Jones Bishop yourway off base. Nonie has lung cancer and conjestive heart failure. If Nonie has to wear a hair piece and or wig,its due to her treatment. So readers whom ever wtote the bull about her, needs a big ass wooping.

Re: “Thinking Out Loud

My band Graffiti played Summer Arts around 1990. A great time was had by all. My favorite memory was two pairs of ospreys diving into the lake to catch fish to feed to their young in nearby nests.

Re: “Meditate on This

Loved the article. Yes go out and see musicians, especially our local ones. Buddy Reed and the Rip It Ups is at the Speakeasy every Saturday 10 pm. No cover for now. They're the genuine article when it comes to roots blues that you can really dance to. Also, they and the Speakeasy wasnt listed in the music & more calendar at all this week.

Re: “Meditate on This

Nice work, Jennifer, and enjoyed for an old home, from afar, as well as the present day. I was a musician once, too.

Re: “Musical twists

Frank Zappa, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull… all "prog-rock" bands. Anyone who would "skitter away" from such awesome music should never be writing a music column. Perhaps this is a strong indication why The Setlist sucks, especially when compared to its predecessor, The Hum. Not only is it thin on live music info, but the banal chit-chat is extremely annoying. I'll be getting my music news from The Mad River Union and Bob Doran. (And btw, it's bWreck, NOT B-Wreck. Take a look at their web site, bwreck.com.)

Re: “Dance the Night Away

"Also, Dead Man's Tale, about which not much is known other than they are also local" you know that you could've took five minutes or less of your time to find out something to say about Dead Mans Tale. ...check them out on August 16th at the Barfly in Eureka and next time you will be able to say something.... When you write about music in Humboldt you should experience it!!!!!!!!!
