Re: “UPDATE: Officer Involved Shooting in Eureka

The suspect I know was wounded at Sole Savers. There is no way someone can fire that many shoots at that close of a range and not hit the suspect with bullets. I'm the only one that was outside when the officer began shooting and at him to see it that close. I seen multiple shoots from the officer going into the Mazda from less than three feet. There was never any other time an officer came close to shooting him after that. He was too far away. His wounds slowed him down to the point where they found him.

Re: “Taxpayer Advocate Leo Sears Dies

Leo was lion. He knew what was going on in this county and was willing to speak up when things were both right and wrong. Agree with him or not you left his presence more aware of what you were doing and how it affected our community. Leo cared deeply about this county and put his money and his mouth where he thought it would do the most. Even though I would always get an earful of criticism and a drop of praise I knew it was well deserved. Rest in Peace my friend.

Re: “Sometimes Voters Just Sit a Race Out

No Kim, this header should read:

Like obedient cogs dutifully protecting the multi-billion dollar stream of election ad-revenue, you will not find one mainstream "journalist" with the courage to question the legitimacy of U.S. elections that have the lowest turnout in the industrialized world.

Instead, readers are consistently mislead by countless articles like this one, always calculating election turnout by the number of registered voters and not the overwhelming majority of "POTENTIAL VOTERS", IE, the 80% that did not vote in the presidential primaries!

Reporting under-votes by the minority of participants is an irrelevant distraction.

Yes, 72% of registered voters cast their ballots last November, however, 70% of potential voters have been abstaining in local and national elections since the early 1970's!

Even a 10 year old can quickly look up voting age populations to compare to their community's voter turn-out.

Would reporting the greater reality and alerting the public help address this catastrophe?

Of course, but finding "journalism" that reports in the public interest requires a subscription to distant publications and media like "Democracy Now".

Re: “Ferndale Cowboy in National Rodeo Finals Tonight

Poor research on this story. Who is Bill Bugenig? Never met him... Billy or "B" on the other hand... I'll quote the article: "This process should be accomplished within three seconds." Really? My understanding is that the arena record is 3.0 seconds. So, ONE person in history has accomplished it in equal to three seconds. Get your facts straight, talk to some people who know "Bill", talk to some people who know the sport, be a journalist.

Re: “HumBug: I Gotta Get Out More

Where are ticks in Humboldt co. If I stay away from my yard bushes, am I ok? I don't go walking in woods or grassy areas, just street, neighborhood.

Re: “Three Years On, The Edge Tries to Stay Sharp

During the last Depression, officials in every profession were pressured to stifle compelling reports of human suffering. Public dissent was repressed and many Americans escaping the Dust Bowl were stopped from entering California by the Highway Patrol.

Despite Humboldt County's five newspapers, none bothered to report how many local families are still being bankrupted and foreclosed in record numbers since the 2008 collapse, the largest collapse since the 1930's. According to an article in the "Humboldt Edge", not one local journalist has reported on this county's "Trends Report" documenting horrific statistics in every measurable human condition.

The written word remains powerful and powerful forces remain allied against it.

Re: “Eureka City Council Receives Plaque, Rejects Cannabis Urgency Ordinance

The city is wanting to get the money. They don't want to spend money on people ESP w issues nor on tax paying citizens either nor for the security of those tax paying citizens nor for the availability of more affordable housing for those tax paying citizens

How would u like to see your additional tax money spent

Humboldt needs a 24/7 residential mental institution

Then when the word gets out on their free government phones that their is a mental institution in Eureka, the people w issues will move to another town that does not have a mental institution

Of course that won't be happening. Instead u eill have various outdoor camping sites or container sites or whatever. Then the rest of the day the people w issues are free to harass the general public ....

I haved recently moved and am now living in an area where I have yet to see people with issues for 2 1/2 months.

Good Luck

Re: “Eureka Rotary Members Donated 110 Turkeys to Rescue Mission

Meanwhile in 2015 "Readers also liked..."…

what happened to that?

Re: “Eureka Rotary Members Donated 110 Turkeys to Rescue Mission

Sweet little holiday burb AND ZERO winter shelters ANYWHERE, Arcata house full with long waiting list. Religious teachings at Rescue Mission hellish for many.

And for those with dogs (who have cared for them long-term) nothing. People lament the full animal shelters yet instead of helping people KEEP their dog the general public majoirty CHOOSES to have dogs caged indefinitely in cramped over-full shelters or disappear into some "Non-profit" whose owners make a salary (aka PROFIT) on charging to take in the pets of others and on charity of donations yet homeless get no charity, not enough to survive and heal (putting down the dogs would be kinder). Meanwhile the "Charitable" get praised. It is the homeless who are enduring hell who deserve some amazement for not having killed themselves yet...though many have and it goes entirely unreported as the housed sleep warm in their beds after dinner and tv. Unscrupulous growers want to adopt dogs to let them run loose and protect their property, but they can pay rent so they are winners!
Meanwhile, the homeless after turkey will have to do drugs or drink to try and withstand the agony of homelessness. So much food in this county it goes to waist and waste. No housing though nor mental health place for long-term recovery. At least they will have a full belly when they get sick and die in the wet and cold and unsheltered while turkey donators pat themselves on the back.

Re: “Appeals Court Reinstates Lawsuit in Fatal Fortuna Police Shooting

We pay police plenty to act professionally.

Unfortunately, a horrible economy has seen a flood of police cadets that are terrified and poorly trained but will do whatever it takes to support their family with one of the best retirement packages in the nation for public employees.

Re: “UPDATED: Jury: Officer, McClain Both Negligent in Police Shooting

Tommy Mcclain is my nephew, he is deeply loved missed and will always be remembered. He was 22yrs old, had a full time job he picked up doing roofing and he was rather enjoying life at his young age. He had never had a criminal background, and he was a very happy joyful young man. He had no enemies, not that I've ever heard of, and before moving to Eureka with my other nephew, Tommy and I had probably a good 4 close years where we basically went or did everything together. I love Tommy very much and for this officer to say he had never encountered my nephew is a total lie, I remember him calling me a few weeks prior to the shooting taking place, and he had told me that an officer had basically drove up on him and my other nephew in the back alley and begun harassing him and asking him all sorts of questions, all because he was a face this officer didn't recognize. Also for him to state that he never seen a weapon, while Tommy was complying with the other officers orders, began firing once my nephew was ordered to get on the ground is absurd, and to fire 7 out of 15 rounds, mind you two of those shots were while Tommy was already hit and on the ground, would be considered murder to any other individual that wasn't wearing a badge. Then to not recover a weapon from the wounded, coming back the following day with a warrant to find a replica BB gun and to seize things belonging to Tommy such as a ps3,tablet,laptop ect, to try and find evidence to try and run his name through the dirt is beyond any belief I would have for a public service like the police department to ever do. The fact that Mills presented 4 different pictures to the press the last being a weapon with a clip the first one without, should be considered tampering, and to make the officer that was lead officer in the shooting a representative for the department so he could hear all testimonies is down right dispicable, for law enforcement is and should only be that, to enforce the law, not be above it in no manner, there was NO reason this life should have been taken that night or any night, officers shouldn't be allowed to shoot to kill and not be held accountable for the incident, they are trained, Linfoot had years of experience in law enforcement and had to practice with his weapon at a firing range every so often, and to use 7 rounds to take down a a young man showing no threat should have repercussions for his non existent ability to wound instead of murder this young man. The money is no issue because the money can't buy back what was taken, but to find this officer not fully negligent is beyond me seeing how a weapon was never recovered off of my nephews person and taking of a life without cause is murder.

Re: “UPDATED: Jury: Officer, McClain Both Negligent in Police Shooting

Three officers with guns drawn and only officer Linfoot starts shooting?

Linfoot said he was "scared" and four wild shots into a home with 3 toddlers inside confirms it.

A single and consistent demand from officers for Tommy to "hit the ground", or even a shot to the leg would have saved this young man's life.

Eureka's officers remain poorly trained and poorly screened.

Is anyone surprised that the first civil trial in Humboldt County's shinny new federal courthouse was another EPD shooting?
