The City Of Eureka is getting pretty good at taking people and moving them from bad situations to even worse situations, while forcing those people into even more dependency upon government. Beats the heck out of bringing living-wage jobs to the area and HEALING healthcare that doesn't just turn people into pain-filled addicts who are conditioned to see drugs as the only "answer"...
"Humboldt County 4th District Supervisor Virginia Bass refers to challenges Chinn's outreach faced from local business owners and the city of Eureka as a 'dark time in our recent history.'"
Local business owners are still fighting the tools that get affordable housing and SRO's built, ie, policies, ordinances and fees that make temporary group shelters obsolete.
Celebrating a temporary shelter while fighting humane policies and turning independent motel housing into boarded-up firetraps is reprehensible.

Just my Freedom of Speech in America.
This is my freedom of speech.
Another Paul Gallegos in our D.A. Office. What a sad and pathetic world we live in. The only thing between Maggie Fleming is they probably had the girl tested for Alcohol and Drugs. When I lost my 2 daughters and there friend in an auto Accident almost 13 years ago the male driver of that car was never drug or Alcohol tested. His family has a history of drug abuse. He got off with just a slap on the wrist for killing 3 people and there was almost a 4th death in this accident. The kid was on a Suspended License and had no Insurance. So we didn't see squat not that that mattered. What mattered was seeing that Justice was served but Paul Gallegos could not prosecute him because he didn't feel like it and we later Learned the judge in the case Christopher Wilson once dated his Aunt. We never learned that till the trial was over tho. The judge should have at least excused himself for. Conflict of interest. Yes I did go to the Bar Association in San Francisco against the Judge Assocation and was told beings trial was over we couldn't appeal for a new trial. Now we understand how corrupt our justice system really is and the sadest. Part is us Tax Payers are the one who pays there wages. Time for the Laws to Change somehow and quickly.
I am so sorry for your loss.

Yesterday, I walked in my first ever Pride march. I enjoyed the march and festival and felt both welcome and safe. The people around me seemed to be having fun, at ease, and glad to be there. I'm glad that I went and I greatly appreciate how it was easy to participate and support Pride and the LGBT community.
Where did you get that these bullets were from a BB gun? The things lodged into the wall after making it through windows, blinds, and curtains.
Despite Humboldt Pride's claims of creating a safe space for the festival, many people did not feel safe to attend as it is members of the Humboldt Pride BOD that are being investigated for the shootings.
The moderated, open forum you mention is something that's been organized by Humboldt Pride with their chosen moderator. It is not a neutral event and a fair outcome cannot be expected.
NCJ, you're amateurs. Obviously your readers are better reporters than any of you! Stop with the BS apologies, and focus on your jobs instead -- then this sort of crap won't happen.
Plus, Rick Breen sounds like a bad liar.
Wow, what a great site, all of the posts are so informative for people with disabilities. I liked it! I also have a blog/site about that covers wheelchair related stuff. Please feel free to visit. Thanks for sharing.
I wonder why there was no intention or attempt to land at ACV which was closer instead of Crescent City.
Hey, very nice site. I came across this on Google, and I am stoked that I did. I will definitely be coming back here more often. Wish I could add to the conversation and bring a bit more to the table, but am just taking in as much info as I can at the moment. Thanks for sharing.
It would be wonderful to read here the support systems in place for those who foster children who have experienced extreme trauma in their lives. As well as information on the training a foster parent has available to them to address the needs of children who are born addicted to drugs, alcohol fetal syndrome, sexually exploited, neglected and physically harmed by their birth parents. Having known only a handful of birth parents who lost their children to the system and then did the rehab and parenting classes and are now successfully parenting, their stories need to be told for the one's facing severe issues. There is hope. And hope is nothing without backing to reform one's life to honor the children they have brought into the world. Kudos to the families which choose to foster. With all the inherent risks of bringing an unknown child or teen into your home, you need training and support.
Why stop there?
Humboldt County has horrendous statistics in every human health category...including foster care failure rates.
Many of these youths are not suitable for foster care and require what all youths require.
Unfortunately, these programs mostly disappeared in the last generation, part of the broader government and business divestment from human resources, infrastructure and jobs.
These youths need one source guiding them through applications for Medi-Cal, food stamps, financial aid, employment and housing with a modest stipend as long as they remain in school. It requires a business community that puts their money where their mouth is by developing a wage subsidy program for part-time jobs.
Anything less is inhumane.
Why have kids if you cannot care for them? I wish I had the space for a kid or two in need.
Thank you very much Kimberly and the North Coast Journal for this thorough investigative journalism!
The police have had all the facts for some time, and if they haven't made an arrest by now there has to be a problem. Once an arrest and charges made, we need to know why all of this took so long.
Agree. Hearts are trashy.
