What a sad and frustrating article!!!
Sad because the writer's lack of perspective on the actual dance world makes one wonder what her experience is, either as a dancer, creator, and/or as a cultivated audience member who is exposed to diverse styles and cultures. No doubt she attends the shows Center Arts programs for our community. Unfortunately they represent a narrow window to the diverse dance experience happening today in the world.
Frustrating because she has been given an opportunity through her writing to make dance more available and inviting to all, and she fails to do so. She keeps expressing a provincial outlook that maintains this very forward thinking area of the country still in the 19th century, as far as dance is concerned.
Being able to write is not the only prerequisite to writing about dance. One must also know about dance.
Please, NCJ, cover more dance, use people with a more direct and vibrant relationship to the dance world, and spare us your writer's obvious lack of knowledge and understanding of dance.
