From the county's website: "Payment to jurors begins on the second and subsequent days. You will not get paid on the first day of service. The minimum amount paid is set by the State Legislature. The county pays $15.00 per day plus .34 cents per mile one-way from home....
Some employers may pay the difference between your jury allowance and your salary. For example, if your salary for the day is $35.00 and the jury fee is $15.00, your employer may pay $20.00. However, this is not required by law."... and nobody does.
Mystery solved! If they want people to show, why don't you pay them NOT $15 a day... who in their right mind is gonna show up for that? It's also pretty pertinent information to exclude from an article about this...
Here is a prayer song that HSU grad, Hannah Ford has dedicated to abducted Humboldt County Aid Worker, Jeff Woodke. Please add your heart's cry to this prayer, if you will. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMonbg2DUcQ
I don't get why some of you think it was an injustice to close that place down. I remember driving past it as a little kid going to and from the mall, always noting how filthy and destitute it looked.
Now I'm in my 30s, and I'm quite happy that such a place (which only enables people to continue living in squalor) has been boarded up. It was nothing but a festering eyesore for everyone driving through Eureka to see. It was bad for the city, as well as the poor souls who had to call such a place a home.
It has been a year and a half since this was first posted, so I hope that means people like Guy Anderson went on to get the help they needed.
If carlotta housekeeping was done their would be no spiders cleanliness is next to goddlyness

Providing shelter for 79 people is a great benefit to those 79 & to the larger community. People with shelter are more likely to gain employment & to become able to take care of themselves and then can go on to give back to the community. -abe farag
I presented a 3-page analyses to the city council describing in minute detail why the Marina Way location presents health and safety hazards to the homeless, and why it goes against the original intent expressed in the General Plan, ordinance No. 5-201, the Industrial/Coastal Dependent zoning designation, and so on. Also noted are significant hazards presented by Dock B, flooding, lack of safe "back door" (exit) from the end of a pocket street, noise pollution from the next door logging operation, not to mention the loss of many parking spaces for visitors. Also, cars, pedestrians and wheelchairs wouldn't be allowed to go the whole stretch of Marina Way. Some think that Marina Way offers more privacy than other sites, but that is an illusion promoted by those who don't know the street very well. In addition to it being the coldest and dampest place in Winter around here, the Coastal Commission advised the Eureka City Council on Monday to scrap this location. Good!
