HIKE: Meet at the Dry Lagoon Parking Lot at 11:00 a.m. This guided interpretative walk will begin along the beach and then head inland following the trail around the back of Sharp Point to Stone Lagoon. Hikers will meet up with the paddling party for lunch and to celebrate the reopening of Ryan’s Cove Campground before heading back to Dry Lagoon. This hike is approximately 5 miles round-trip and includes some gradient. Wear comfortable hiking shoes. The trail may be damp. Difficulty: Moderate.

Looking forward to the December Arts Alive in Old Town, Eureka, we made reservations at Gabriel’s restaurant, knowing that it is normally a busy event. My wife and I arrived first, followed by our daughter and granddaughter while our son-in-law parked their car. We were seated next to the bar and it was quite loud in the restaurant; it was to be expected during December Arts Alive. The waiter came to take our order within a minute of our son-in-law’s arrival, so he asked for a few more minutes. About ten minutes later, he motioned to our waiter that he was ready. We placed our order—our daughter ordered two appetizers to be served as her dinner. The rest of us got our salads, and the first appetizer was delivered at the same time. Since our waiter wasn’t available, we explained to the hostess that the appetizers were to be served with our dinners and asked her to take it back. After a short while, our dinners were served. The food was excellent, and we all shared our dinners together to try all the yummy foods. All-in-all, the food was wonderful and the service was good even though it was very busy. We were happy and had absolutely no complaints.

The next thing that happened was the waiter came to take our plates and he set the bill on the table. My daughter said we would like dessert and could we get a dessert menu. The waiter said he was done serving us, goodbye. What????? We all looked at each other perplexed and confused. What had just happened? We had no idea. We called the hostess over and asked her what was going on. She didn’t know and went to talk to the waiter. She came back and said the waiter said we yelled at him. Really? We were happy with both the food and the service. We were dumbfounded. The waiter walked by and my son-in-law said “Excuse me,” and the waiter waved him off, pointed to our table and then at the door! At this point, we should have got up and left without paying the bill since they kicked us out for absolutely no reason! In frustration, my son-in-law made a bad choice and said to the waiter, “Hey asshole.” He ignored us.

We then asked to see the manager. He came to the table, talked to us for a very short while, than went and talked to the waiter. He came back and told us what the waiter claimed. He said he was too busy to deal with this so what did we want him to do. We asked for the waiter to talk to us. He did, and we still didn’t understand his complaint. He didn’t seem to be able to say what we yelled at him or when it occurred. My son-in-law apologized for his “Hey asshole” remark. The waiter said that maybe he was too sensitive or overreacted (to what, who knows!). Hands were shaken then he left. We sat wondering what we should do. We called for the manager again. He was short with us saying he was too busy for this and, again, what did we want him to do. I said that any restaurant, especially an upper-scale restaurant like they are trying to be (as indicated by their decor, menu and prices), would comp the meal since they had ruined our initially pleasant night. He said that we ate the food (true) and he wouldn’t comp the meal. He again said he didn’t have time for this (isn’t making sure customers are happy and treated well on of the most important jobs of a restaurant manager?) and that we could come back another day and talk about this. Yeah, sure, I’m going to spend even more of MY time to try and reason with these nut jobs.

We were happy with the food and the service and had no complaints. It was loud, so we might (I stress, might) have called the waiter in a loud voice so we could be heard, but we never yelled at him in anger. This whole contrived situation came out of the blue and floored us. It ruined our Arts Alive night and greatly upset our granddaughter who thought that they were mad at her. I am seriously contemplating taking this horrible establishment to small-claims court and getting my money back and then some for mental anguish and abuse.

Bottom line: The food is excellent, but the staff who runs the restaurant are sick, mentally-defective nut-jobs who have no business running a restaurant. I would avoid this place at all costs. Fortunately, there are plenty of really good restaurants in the area so there is no need to go to this weird and abusive establishment. If you want Italian, try Mazzotti’s or Bella Italia instead.

Clearly the finest Grange, or any other type social/fraternal organization offering of breakfast (for that matter), of ALL the offerings in the Greater Eureka / Humboldt Bay Area. And, yes, we have had them all. This fine, full plate of "home-cooked" breakfast-food for around $6 per adult is well worth every penny. The recent moderate increase of around a dollar possibly helped with needed maintenance to the lovely 19th century building occupied by the Grange, since the Great Depression Era. The new red paint matches other historic buildings nearby, and is worth any increase, if related. No apple sausage here...just regular fare done right!...And served till NOON!

The food was just okay: the jerk chicken not moist enough. The waiter forgot to bring the salads, so it was a long wait until the food arrived. Too much rice on the place. As in way too much rice. The waiter also forgot the pineapple, which probably should have been plated--or better yet, a vegetable on the plate, with the pineapple, too. If they're going to last, step it up. It was really slow the night we ate, but the service and food were slow. It was a cool evening, as in Humboldt cold, and yet they left the front door open. We asked that the door be closed, but they didn't not comply.

Beautiful building, excellent food, however ........... when we arrived at 6.10pm on Friday 15th May 2015, there were 4 tables occupied, amounting to approx 14 diners. We were supplied with menus and left to peruse - for a long time. Eventually, I went to the bar and asked to place an order. A customer sitting at the bar said they were having staffing problems but the man who appeared to be in charge went to our table to take3 the order. He brought 2 pints of Guiness and asked if we wanted water as well, which we confirmed. This did not arrive and I had to attract a waiter with a jug to request two glasses.

We waited over 30 minutes, but if he food is freshly cooked, then one does not mind.
As the meal was put in front of me, I commented that the plate was cold and was told it was hot in the middle, underneath. I felt it and commented that it was barely 'hot.' He went away and I cut into the end of the sausage (Bangers and Mash) and it was cokld, as was the sweet potato mash. I told my husband it was unacceptable, and to my surprise, the Chef appeared at the table, asking if there was a problem.. I explained a nd he tasted it, agreeing that it was below the required temperature.

He took it away, saying he would sort it out, leaving me holding a dirty knife and fork in the air. This took 10 minutes. When the meal returned, ther sausages had been split into three, lenghtwise, presumably to facilitate microwaving.

When I queried why the food was cold, he said there was a new assistant in the kitched. then he did excused it by saying he did not like to put the lamp on the food to keep hot etc etc.

The food was good, but by this time, my husband had finished his meal and the plate removed.

We asked for the Bill and I was surprised to read that no concession has been made for a spoiled evening, not to mention dangerously cool food which could have made me ill. I spoke with the man in charge who asked what I wanted him to do. I felt my meal ought to have been discounted by 50% as a matter of goodwill, but that I should not have had to ask.

He offered 10%, reeluctantly, which I refused - the entire exchange was conducted without anger or raised voices - and so he went off to speak with the Chef. He returned sayng that they felt 10% was fair as the meals had been consumed, so I had no choice but to accept, still saying that I was disappointed with the decisio n and attitude.

I was expecting a discount of approx $4 - imagine my bemusement to read that he had only given 10% off MY MEAL AND MY GUINNESS !!! so this amounted to $2

So derisory, so dismissive, obviously knowing and not caring that we were just passing throoough, never to return.

As I said, good food, but pity about the Service and lack of customer care.
