Vegan Potluck

What:

On Sunday, May 6th at noon, the Humboldt Vegetarian Society will host a Cinco de Mayothemed vegan potluck and free screening of the film Vegucated at the Humboldt Area FoundationCommunity Center, 373 Indianola Road in Bayside.Vegucated is a feature-length documentary that follows three meat- and cheese-loving NewYorkers who agree to adopt a vegan diet for six weeks. There’s Brian, the bacon-lovingbachelor who eats out all the time, Ellen, the single mom who prefers comedy to cooking, and Tesla, the college student who avoids vegetables and bans beans. They have no ideathat so much more than steak is at stake and that the fate of the world may fall on theirplates. Lured with true tales of weight lost and health regained, they begin to uncover hiddensides of animal agriculture and soon start to wonder whether solutions offered in films likeFood, Inc. go far enough. Before long, they find themselves risking everything to expose anindustry they supported just weeks before. But can their conviction carry them when times get tough? What about on family vacationsfraught with skeptical step-dads, carnivorous cousins, and breakfast buffets?Part sociological experiment, part science class, and part adventure story, Vegucatedshowcases the rapid and at times comedic evolution of three people who share one journeyand ultimately discover their own paths in creating a kinder, cleaner, greener world, one biteat a time. This event is open to the public and is free of charge. Attendees should bring a vegan dishto share, as well as their own plates, cups, and utensils. (Vegan means no animal products, including meat, fish, dairy, eggs, honey, etc.)The potluck will start at noon and the Vegucated screening will begin promptly at 1:00. Guestsare welcome to attend just one portion of the event or the other if they wish. The Humboldt Vegetarian Society is a group of vegans, vegetarians, and omnivores who meetmonthly to share delicious vegan food, recpies, and good company.
