Tony Orlando

What:

In 1971, as a favor to a record producer, Tony Orlando recorded a demo record of Candida. A few weeks later, Tony got a call from the producer “Hey man,” he said “We’ve got a hit!” A hit indeed! Candida went on up the charts to number one and Tony Orlando’s career took off. Because of the success of Candida, Tony was offered Knock three Times – which not only went to number one but was the top song of 1971.

By now Tony Orlando was a recognized mega-hit machine. Along with two backup singers, Tony became Tony Orlando and Dawn and they became an international recording and TV sensation. In 1973, he recorded Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Ole Oak Tree, which became the number one song for the year, and grew into the 70’s American anthem of hope and homecoming, reunion and renewal.

The string of hits continued including Sweet Gypsy Rose, Who’s In The Strawberry Patch With Sally, Cupid, Steppin’ Out (Gonna Boogie Tonight), Mornin’ Beautiful and He Don’t Love You (Like I Love You).
